I would check out the JBL EON series. Used you can pick up 15" Inch self powered speaker for 199$ each. That's for the G1 series G2 series will go for 299$ each.

Kudos on the support. Definitely look into either JBL or maybe QSC. If he loses interest in the near future, you want your investment to retain value rather than take a nose dive as soon as the box gets open. Some of the cheaper stuff does that.

i use a pair of rokit 5s for my production and rokit 8s for my djing. they are both hooked up to a krk 10 sub and they sound good for the price. you can almost always get a deal on them or get them as a part of a package for really cheap (i got my 5s for free and my 8s for $170 each...both brand new). you could probably find a bunch of them on used sites or ebay as well. they are pretty popular so i don't think you will have a problem selling them, but you may have to take less money though more people will want them so they will probably go quicker.Quote:

Even if your boy gives up on the dj thing (which I can guarentee he wont) he will never grow tired of some awsome speakers.
Monitors are all well and good, but if your son wants to DJ with them as opposed to create music, they're not as ideal. They simply won't go as loud as you want to. As a father, that might appeal to you and your neighbours though. =P

It's post like these that make me love DJTT even more, My dad supports me because he's seen how much I've poured into music. I started on a Numark Mix track and to be honest I'm glad my parent's didn't go all out and get me something crazy because I think it's important as a DJ to work up your way in gear as you work your way up in skill and commitment. I don't know too much about speakers but I hear great things about mackie thumps, but I seriously believe you could start on much less. maybe it would be a fun exercise to let him research some speakers on a budget? that way he gets to learn the product market and and additional info he'll pick up from looking into it. And I mainly want to thank you from A teenage Son to a father for the fact that you're supporting your kid in something you probably don't really under stand but can see that he wants to do it more than anything.
If you do Thumps or something along those lines you'll also need speaker stands which can add $100+ each to the cost. You'll also need balanced TRS cables that will probably add close to $16--$80 total depending on length. Stands can wait for a little while, but not to long.
