I have an Audio 8 and it does 4 decks just fine. Be aware that you can only use 2 decks with vinyl timecode. The other two have to be CD timecode or you can just use all 4 with CD's. This isn't a limitation of the DDM4000, it's the Native Instruments sound cards (Audio 6/8/10).
What I used to do is have Decks A and B with vinyl DVS and C and D controlled by MIDI. However, now I've got a DVS mixer (Denon X-1600) and some swanky CDJ2000 Nexus' , I use all 4 decks with Vinyl and CD control.
EDIT: I didn't know that the preamps were the limiting factor in the sound cards! Everyday is a school day!
