Had a bad set

My general idea to gear and DJing is that if I can't operate in a dark club while im struggling to see the mixer, then im not good enough to dj at clubs - therefore I strive to know the standard mixers. Not so much that I can throw big 4 deck mashup/live remix set with no lights what so ever - but to the point where I always know which track is leading and then I just let the music tell me when to cut things out and make a transition.

It has saved me on more than one occasion. I can give you one example:

the soundsystem ran on one electrical system, and the DJ gear on another. the fuse for the DJ gear electrical system got blown/destroyed. so I had to finish the set with my full battery on my mac and my S4 buspowered directly into the soundsystem (bypassing the usual of just plugging the s4 into a club mixer). I had to turn the screen on my macbook off completely and only turn it on when searching for music. because I knew my mixer in and out I could complete a four deck set that lasted 4 hours. It was hard though :P

This is so true! I once accidentally pressed play on the wrong deck with the line fader up causing a serious trainwreck! No one at all noticed including a few dj's that were there!

They actually still perform like that. But…they're doing mostly-hardware live PA sets, and it's part of their image to look like geeks.

I agree wholeheartedly. And that's a cool story. I honestly think that more people should be like that. Laptop Stands have made DJs way too reliant on actually being able to see things. IMHO, as long as you've got a working meter and enough light to pick your tracks, you're good. Though…if you're actually on vinyl, target lights are a huge help.

Random side note…my home mixer is a xone:62 that I bought used. Whoever had it before the guy I got it from painted it blue…and didn't bother re-labeling anything. It confuses people. I've never had a problem.

The only things that I feel like people notice is when you don't pull a track out at the right time.

^^ Ha My first thought was also Orbital when I read dark dj booth! I remember them preforming like that years ago!

Orbital wore these BACK in the day.

ALSO...odd.....they played something similar to the "brown note"....

It was a low bass rumble for about 5 seconds....that had everyone RED in the face and heaving!

Maybe it was the LSD....but I was not the only one!

It was cool to see them jamming live. Was some of my early adventures...

You know, you guys are right. I just played for 2 hours in my apartment in complete dark (its really been bothering me) and I would say it was some of my best mixing ever. I have no idea why I was making mistakes wednesday night.

Most people will dance to anything regardless of how it is mixed.
From a technical standpoint, you feel shitty but honestly nobody goes to a club to criticize the DJ.
At least you're not one of those guys who just DJs too look cool; you actually care about how you do your job which is a good thing so chin up! :)

I have to admit that when i cock up i get angry with myself, but you just have to forget about it by the end of the track and come back from it, like others have said no one really notices, however i did have a guy on friday night trying to educate me and explain that i was doing it all wrong and making mistakes, also i needed to play something other than house, however the 200 people on the dancefloor disagreed with him!
