Trust me mate, Ableton is by far leaps and bounds ahead of Logic as far as producing "dance" music. While Logic does work more like a traditional DAW (i.e. Pro Tools/Cubase), much like those it's more useful and flexible for "traditional" studios where they are capturing live performances.
In that sense, if you've used those other DAWs Ableton does have a bit of a learning curve but once you wrap your head around it you're work flow and creativity will come much more naturally.
And I agree with Zhao as well, I never used the session view myself, but now that I'm developing a "live" setup I couldn't imagine NOT having it. And like you, I have "traditionally" DJed with 3-4 decks, but this live set up is for something completely different than what I play when I DJ. It's just another creative outlet that wouldn't be practical with Logic.
Wow. No idea how i missed that, just threw it into a song, and already changes the whole thing. I would stick with ableton, but the price point is still killing me...
Still worth it. Abletons native pluggins are solid (made my first release with no third party pluggins). And you can still buy your VSTs at a later date.
I dont agree with your here. WHile i prefer ableton, its not MORE designed for dance music. Its exactly the same, just a different workflow.
I could find you thousands of people both on the logic and ableton side ready to say that their DAW is designed more for dance music.
But like i said before, it comes down to.... workflow. Thats all.
Yeah, i mean, guetta (not saying he's any good) uses both, skrillex uses ableton, SvD and AvB both use logic, Swedish House Mafia uses Logic, like VST's, it's what you make of it, and what you prefer. Personally, i enjoy using live, i just wish i could try Logic before i buy it. I'd rather not take forever to decide though. Maybe a good pro's con's list is in order, if i'm feeling geeky(;
You can get the gist of how logic is by watching the D.ramirez videos...
So, I'm actually not a huge fan of Logic, despite using it all the time. I won't be upgrading to a new version. It's perfectly capable, but there are enough workflow things that I just don't like about it that it's not worth money.
Heck, I'd probably sell you my license for not too much if there was any way to track chain of custody. Unfortunately, it's Express not Pro (from back when that was a thing) and doesn't come with a few things that I think are kinda cool (Multipressor, Multimeter, Space Designer, and Delay designer stand out). And, more unfortunately, I think there wasn't even a license key or any kind of copy protection, so I'm not sure it's possible to sell it legally.
Ableton is cool, but I hate it's workflow. I own it as well. I enjoyed it for DJing, and I'd use it for a computer-based LivePA set in ah eartbeat. But when it comes to production/recording, I think it takes forever to do anything. Unfortunately, I honestly prefer Pro Tools, which makes most people think I'm weird. Something about the way it works just makes sense to me. And if you're interested, there is a demo available. But you have to buy a $50 iLok to run it, and Avid is kinda bitchy about what computers it runs on. It's also really expensive if you can't get an academic license.
The only reason I bought Logic 9 over an academic copy of Pro Tools 9 was that Avid said my computer wouldn't run it. After PT 10 came out, I decided to just try the demo and see what happened…and everything worked. So…in short, I won't be upgrading Logic no matter what they do with Logic 10…I'll be upgrading to Pro Tools as soon as I either have the copy to drop on the full version or as soon as I qualify for the academic discount again.
So, if you have the $50 to throw at a 30-day demo and think you might be interested, give it a try. I think it's awesome.
If not, if you can figure out how to do it, I'll sell you Logic Express (boxed install) for like $100.
Honestly, i think i might have to go with ableton. I mean, i've been using it for a year, so i already understand it, some things bug me, but truth is, i can pop out a track in a day on there. $420 for the edu license, and that leaves me enough to maybe buy dune right there. Pro tools isn't bad, but i've had dreadful experiences with M-Audio's customer support, where as with live, i hear back via email in one, maybe two days max, which means a lot to me. I won't be dj'ing with live anytime soon, but i can't take for granted i already am comfortable with it. I have like, 200 patches for operator lol
