It is really dumb? Or just reality? There's two names (that I remember) of... "Performers" who hired DJ's to play for them, while they acted on stage. So, it DOES happen. I bet if you google you can find even more cases of this. So, it is a dumb statement?

And yeah, unfortunately, the real masters of scratching, playing live, creating amazing sets creatively using different styles and techniques aren't getting booked. The last festival I went for had two stages: one cramped up to see Guetta, Aoki and the sorts, and the other one almost empty seeing some techno artists. It's not about technique, but music taste. And, EDM main artists tend to play pre-recorded sets. It's sad, but it's true.

Not a festival I'd want to go to and certainly not my experience of festivals/club nights in the UK.

Thing is, tbh, really the situation is this: the big EDM DJ's aren't really DJ's, they're pop music acts, that's it. I don't take anyone of that ilk seriously in DJing terms, purely commercially driven pop acts with songs often written by other people.

I see no problem at all on playing a pre-recorded set. Not all big names do it and there is a lot of "underground" artists that play a pre-recorded set.

The people dancing doesn't care if you are mixing or not. Only DJ's and wannabe's care if the current DJ on deck is playing or not. If the club is full, people are dancing and spending money, the promoter and club owner are happy, why bother? I bet that people would get angrier if you mess up a mixing and engaging on a 4 minute 8 bar loop to mix two tracks.

You could bring up the "We must stand together and fight against these fools", "we must mix and show them what DJ'ing really is...". But in the end, it doesn't really matter ( :) ).

You could open up ableton and set the mixing curves along two tracks with your set with it, you can load up Traktor and set up load markers to automate the process of loading tracks (loading on the 1 could save the "mixing" trouble).

Wake up people, it's what your public says about the party and the songs that you played, not the way you "mixed" that will get everyone pumped about you.

Errrm, maybe in current trend of commerical dance music (read EDM). It's wrong to extend that view across much of the more underground dance music scene, where it couldn't be more different.

If someone gave me big money to play in front of thousands of people with a synced light show, then yes I would... And so would you.

It doesn't mean that's all I'd ever do, but having enough cash to live comfortably is worth having people on forums bash me for cheating.

I might have been tempted 20 odd years ago when I started DJing and was a little naive and wet behind those teenage ears, but certainly not now. Mind you, the concept of a mainstream, global brand DJ was in it's infancy circa 93/94. I would always much rather take a modest fee, drop some lovely Deep & Soulful House music to a small crowd in a nice sweaty, darkened box of a club - that floats my boat.

but the real question is if you're allowed to throw a stage monitor on a fan or not

No, I wouldn't. There are a lot of ways to make money.

People have been playing real instruments with lights and pyro in time for at least 40 years. If the music needs to be recorded for the show to work, that means your lighting and pyro techs aren't worth their pay. Period.

Every single rock and industrial show I've paid for has had sync'd lights. And most of those drummers can't even play a straight tempo for 3 minutes.

I'm not going to let someone else's incompetence bring down my craft.

If you're asking that question to an economics student, which i am, you're not going to get the answer you're looking for.

I'm sure you would take that bag of money too, its just that your price is probably a lot higher than most. That's nothing to be ashamed of.

that being said, it would be pretty boring up there jumping around jesus pose and throwing monitors at my fans. i would try to work out some compromise where i can mix in every other song, or something like that.
