it might be worth noting that while most of you are right, your average party-goer wont notice, perhaps the promoter/manager/owner will, and maybe they care.... and maybe they wont hire you back if you play shitty quality youtube rips/transcodes/what have you. if you are spinning at a house party/bedroom/ informal environment obviously thats a different story BUT if you are being paid to DJ professionally i think you should conduct yourself professionally and that includes having a professional attitude towards sound quality. and the fact is its actually very easy to tell the difference between a 320 proper web release track and a 256 transcode especially on a system. im not even going to get into all the other benefits of using quality files such as keeping a constant gain between tracks and phrasing, but seriously what is the draw in using lower quality files? you get to play all the unreleased dubplates you are too lazy/ignorant/stupid to track down on your own? there is more to being a dj than mixing 2 tracks together and i get the feeling the general attitude on this forum is fuck those other aspects. i mean c'mon- blogs find your music for you, software will mix it for you, facebook will promote you- and you are too lazy to at least make sure you are using quality audio? weak.
I've used bootlegs that I got as 128kbit mp3s on big systems. I've also played them on studio monitors and on very good headphones. I can hear a difference between them and flac files from studio masters. But…I've also heard vinyl. I can hear a difference there too.
I don't have a preference between the shit sound quality of mp3s and the shit sound quality of vinyl. And I'm not willing to pay for CDs. I'd be willing to pay for WAV files if I could afford a bigger SSD or if I dedicated a laptop to just DJing.
But, it's all moot. If they're going through anything resembling a normal DJ's workflow, the signals are going to be clipped to all hell anyway.
Apart from that…say the DJ is a member of an internet forum and has been belittled into submission and actually runs his mixer the way he's supposed to. No problems there.
It's still going to be ruined by whoever set up the crossovers. Every time I've seen the way crossovers are set up in a club, it's pissed me off…typically, they Hi-pass the full range speakers. Then they turn the amps up to compensate for their woofers being too quiet. Oops. Wrong. Since bass and especially the low-mids you're effectively cutting like that are so important for dance music, now you're overloading your tweeters and hurting people's ears…if you're not explicitly causing speaker distortion that sounds bad and hurts. Try again. Oh wait…you're an experienced sound technician…aka "deaf." You can't hear that.
Yeah. Screw that.
MP3 compression takes away a lot less sound quality than idiots ever will…and it doesn't matter whether they were idiots that saved money by buying peavey or idiots who speant the money for function one or EV or anyone else.
Meh.
To be honest, I want the creator of the Funktion 1 system to have those kind of exacting standards... We're talking about the creme de la creme system.
I agree with most of what he says buuuuut he says he want 24bit/96khz files more than anything running through them... >.> goodluck on that buddy. But i do agree that there are alot of things that color the music in a bad way (Winamp colors mids, WMP has a bassboost, only Foobar2k has the flatest response great lows up to the highs) And I also use the Shure SRH440 studio monitor headphones.
Personally I only use 320 & some time feel guilty about that, I wish I could afford money/hard disk space for WAV's I personally can tell on a large system and thats what matters to me. But I don't get paid for DJing so 320's is all I can afford.
There is a funktion 1 sound system in a club near by Digital in Newcastle UK and the sound is immense seen loads of good D&B DJ's there!
As stated by another poster I'd expect the owner of a company that makes top end loud speakers to be a audiophile!
320 is my baseline, but if I have a track that I really want to play that I could only find in 192 I'll play it.
