I've been gigging solidly for 8 years and last night i hit the wrong hot cue, restarting the track that was playing, i was red faced but no one batted an eye lid.

Hehe I just did that at my last gig, too! I don't think anyone noticed. :)
I hate when it happens, but when happens I usually try some crazy filter + FX to lower the volume and I hit at a break with the mouse to advance the track a little bit to keep the energy on.
Right after that I usually mix the next track as fast as I can to a point near a big drop.
Then you are right on the TOP again.
Just don't feel upset when you do it, and don't look the crowd when you mistake, it will apear on your face.
The best is to work things out and on the next big drop look again and see if you get your audience back where you want they :)
The worst thing you can do is to crossfade to the next track intro... No matter what, don't do it ;)
For dark booths check out the gorilla pod flashlight. Bright, magnetic, and you can stand it up.
I still think the biggest single mistake I made DJing involved scratching the wrong record thanks to having to use SSL's Input Reverse. I mean…that future made it possible for me to spin that night, but…yeah…I didn't own controllers of any kind at that point and the cursor had moved…I thought it would switch as soon as I tapped the mouse button. It didn't.
Oops.
