The club I play at he doesn't like the main room DJ's using laptops, controllers etc, But I have held a residency for 5 years in room2 using laptop, controller etc (started on cdj's) but because he knows I play well with my setup he has no issues now.
I think his main beef was that the main room dj's hadn't really done the laptop, controller thing properly and always had crashes etc (pc's) so he couldn't rely on them to do a 6 hour set without any issues
Just like when you plug your MP3 player into your car stereo on newer cars, maybe DJ booths will start having a panel where you can plug into their mixer easily.
Will save having to get on your knees with a torch to find that elusive Line In while trying not to jog the decks...
Seems to me that DJing is still a performance and like all performances, image plays a key role. I don't just own 1 bass and 1 amp. I own 2 4 strings, 1 5 string, 1 6 string, and 1 upright. I have my ampeg all tube rig and my aguilar rig. sure the basses sound a little different and so do the amps, but really it's more about the image. If i'm playing rock, out comes the 4 string fender jazz and the ampeg rig. playing jazz music, better get a different rig out. It's all about how it looks. I'm a good bass player, and I could play on $25 setup and rock out, but that's not getting me the gig. yes, it's stupid, but it's the way the world turns and you have to understand that if you're trying to get the gig.
I don't agree with it though, I think skills should be the only thing that matters, but I know that a lot of people think you can judge that by gear.

To be fair to promoters and club owners, some of them may have their reasons to be that negative about Digitial DJing. They probably had bad experiences. People with crashing computers leading to silent PAs for painful minutes, people who got their whole music collection from soulseek in 128 kbit which sounded horrible, people who simply couldn't mix or overdid the whole FXing - and cuepoint-juggling-thing without even doing it very well. Hell, I'm not a promoter and I've seen it all. And to be honest, some comments here are just as arrogant as those promoters who turn their back on you for using midi controllers may seem to you. No pun intended.
Sure, some of them might just be stupid pricks, though. No doubt about that.
In my experience, they only want to know first if you are actually capable of DJing the oldschool way, for whatever reason. If you want gigs, cope with it. Show them that you have skills, and you usually won't have a problem when you show up with your laptop and controller at the second or third gig.
Anyway, using CDJs isn't that different from using a controller, as long as you know how to beatmatch and you know your tracks, so get over it and get one to practice their handling a bit. It doesn't have to be a CDJ2000, so money isn't as much of a factor as it used to be. Some of them even double as a nice extra midi controller, so why not? Sure, a CDJ may be old technology to a lot of people who started DJing with a controller. But it's proven, it's always around in clubs almost anywhere in the world and in a worst case scenario, an extra CD wallet in your gig bag is a great safety net. So why ignore them, just because they're sooo yesterday?
