Okay, so....
Will this unit require an external sound-card, such as the vci-100? Or is it built in?
Is the functionality well suited for live sets, DJing? It seems like ableton is subpar compared to tractor pro for DJing capabilities, am I comparing apples and oranges?

It needs an external soundcard as far as I know. (Ofcourse you will be able to make do with an ASIO4All soundcard.
Ableton being subpar to traktor with DJing... I think it comes down to, how you DJ/perform.
(Try comparing Moldover, who uses Ableton to remix, with Ean Golden, who turntablism-a-like routines by using Traktor).
Being that this controller is designed for Ableton, does not mean you can't use it with Traktor though. ;)
