Actually....as our local comedian correctly states, it is not a derogatory word in essence.
We (my ancestors...well not even them as I am 2nd generation South African) used it as a bad word.

It means "unbeliever," "disbeliever," or "infidel."

Someone who does not believe in their (the original Dutch South African farmers) so called 'God', is thus a kafir.
