oh forget you apple, any have some advice itunes has mucked up my computer

im really pissed right now and rather then rant im just going to try to list what happened in chronological order. this is a windows xp machine i figure this is a pretty tech literate forum so i figured i would try asking here before moving to other sources. and please - i am pissed off as it is i dont want to hear any mac fanboy crap.

- i uninstalled some of the crap that apple piggybacks on itunes install (namely bonjour)
- itunes stops working due to my excisions
- i go to use ableton, and i use a novation automap controller. the automap server fails launch due to an inability to find dnssd.dll
- i look up dnssd.dll on google and see that it is a bonjour/apple extension.
so...
- i uninstall itunes all together.
- bonjour still shows up on the add/remove programs list and will not uninstall nor will it delete itself from the list saying because it cannot find the msi file. the bonjour folder does not exist any more in program files.
- now everytime i try to reinstall bonjour or itunes the process cant be completed because the computer insists it cannot remove an old file that doesnt even exist


frankly at this point i dont even care about getting itunes back, i just want automap to work again

at least you learned your lesson (i hope): don't mess with stuff if you don't know what it does. anyway, ideas:

1. look up what files are installed by bounjour. now find all of them and delete them. basically do a manual uninstall.

2. get someone to throw you a copy of their files, put them in the right locations on your drive, and see if you have some luck that way. you could at least put them in place and see if the uninstall will go through.

Sounds to me like a shitty uninstall. I would recommend fixing your registry.

i dont want to sound harsh but i should be able to uninstall software that i didnt knowingly choose to install without it doing this sorta shit. i would say this falls pretty close to the definition of malware. as far as i know, automap worked just fine without bonjour or any apple software as it ran just fine before...

but anyways - there are no folders or files left from bonjour to delete. so thats out of the question. and ive used ccleaner to clean up my registry but i still receive the same error messages. ive tried downloading microsofts install cleanup, but the file i download fails to launch. downloaded it from multiple sources - same thing everytime

Get a copy of the file that the uninstaller is trying to delete that is no longer there, and put it there, just to get the uninstaller to finish, then reinstall.

Either that, or try again from safe mode.

Yeah, that sort of shit is the reason why I stopped using Norton products in general (especially their anti virus) years ago. I honestly think that companies that do a half ass job with their uninstall process should be liable for stuff like that.

Anyhow, Registry Mechanic works fine for me, but if you say that you already ran a thorough registry scan, then obviously the problem lies elsewhere.

Its odd because theres plenty of sources which state that this is either a registry issue, infection, or hardware problem. Of course that doesn't really say a whole lot.

+1 hate for itunes. I still don't quite understand why people rely on such a woeful program.

iTunes licks mah bawls on Windows OS, but I sort of caved into using it lately given that I purchased a newer MacBook Pro. Of course on that, it works beautifully lol.

Anyhow, that sucks about the system restore. Usually what I do on my desktop is create a barebone Windows installation, install all my programs, get them setup, etc. Then run Acronis true image to create a restore partition which can restore the PC back to its original state. I have a 2nd drive which stores user files, data, music, etc - and the main drive is OS and programs only.

Really kicks ass to give the middle finger to any problem by pressing F11 to perform a 3 minute OS restore with no bullshit to endure lol.

To manage my music I just manually make folders in my music (i.e. my documents). It takes longer to make playlists but it's much more efficient because I can actually make folders inside folders.

This is such a cluster fuck for me. I'm writing this on my cellphone as restore on my laptop won't work nor will the xp disk that came with it. So for better or worse I am doing a reformat with the vista disk.

I'm pissed and semi placated with 6 pack and a 40 in me watching this ill reputed crap install on my laptop

ugh i did not understand all the negative commentary about vista til now.

it will not not recognize my wireless network. what was once a clearly understandable hierarchy in files and folders - is now plain retarded and confusing. at this point i am piss ass drunk and pissed that instead of spending what should be my friday night from work jamming and writing shit, instead i am just drunk and pissed; and as i write this - still dont know how to fix this. vista runs some retarded ass security thing every time i try to put in the xp installation cd and refuses to acknowledge it.
what pisses me off the most is this laptop was a raw ass deal - i traded an ns7 for this cheap laptop because i needed a decent xp laptop. looks like rather than spending tomorrow, my saturday jamming til my girlfriend gets off work, i will instead be talking to a microsoft tech in india trying to get my install cd to fucking work.

what does it say when you try to load up the XP CD?

Sometimes the software bundled with other software is at the core of what makes the software you want work. pretty sure you need quicktime too for itunes for example.

I never understood why Apple can't get iTunes to work smoothly on Windows. I know Windows has it's quirks but come on! There are so many programs that run just fine and do way more than iTunes.

I'm with rt24. Before I switched from Windows to Mac I just used iTunes for the mp3 transfers to my iPod. It was just too painful to do anything in that god awful program.

problem solved. i still like itunes for throwing together playlists, as both itch and traktor recognize the library. solution to avoiding this bullshit mess - downloaded an older version of itunes that doesnt piggyback this shit on me

I use RePear - let's me treat my ipod like an external drive. Simple. Easy. No Itunes. Win x 40,000

(oh, RePear can also be run from the command line, so I have an automation script that downloads all of yesterday's samples from Juno, searches for my Ipod and loads them all up, ready for me to listen to on the train the next day)

You probably sorted this now, but if anyone runs into the same problem, just dload the missing dnssd.dll file here - http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?dnssd and copy to your windows system folder :)

Had same issue where i uninstalled bonjour, restarted and automap wouldnt load, so added this and all works again.

this is what system restore points are for, find one that predates this, run it and try install again.

Yeah I usually don't trust Windows system restore for everything. What I highly recommend you do is install the OS from scratch, load up all the drivers, programs, update the OS, etc. Then use Acronis True Image to mirror the entire OS into a hidden partition in Acronis called SecureZone. This will allow you at any point to press F11 and instantly (under 3 minutes) do a clean install and revert to exact state it was at the time of imaging without dealing with any Windows dependent bullcrap.

As for any data, music projects etc - that can either be stored on an EHD, or if the HD is big enough, create an extended partition separate from the OS partition so that the restore process does not touch the user files.

On that note - ya'll motha fucka's necropostin' :D

and on the mac tip - ive known people who have had the same bullshit problem on a mac. i swear you mac fanboys would recommend macs as the solution to heroin addiction. its great youve had no problems with your computer but more often than not that amounts to luck of the draw.

I also hate itunes but was forced to use it so that i could browse easily in traktor,
but its really slow at scanning a hd for media, media player takes a few mins, but itunes has to be left over night. and editing tags in itunes is slow too

Dont use system restore mate, and could've made all sorts of other changes that didnt want to have to do again, so was much quicker to just replace the .dll this time. Quick google search & thanks to this post & that site it was sorted in 5 mins. Might be useful for others who dont use restore, though +1 from mmauve as backup options.

Used to have system restore totally removed from xp and just run a really stripped down version so it would run without any issues, but have windows 7 now and has been really solid on 64 and 32 bit machines so leave all the extra stuff on. Solid with whatevers been thrown at it, which is cool.

I tried loads of times with itunes over the years, but few issues like syncing with external players & the sluggishness & closed nature of various functions meant i could never integrate it as my main player. Shame as i spend a lot of time on my 350gig music collection & wanted it for the same reason. Couple of years ago i went with media monkey (from tip off on traktor forum) and its highly recommended if you looking for other option. Obviously a little getting used to, but for me it has more flexibility, no problems, and the main thing with traktor is being able to drag and drop files from media monkey direct to traktor. MM keeps itself organised by monitoring my music folder, and in traktor i mirror the playlists in mediamonkey by just drag and drop. You can also set automatic playlist in MM which is great for latest breaks with 4 stars, or whatever criteria you set...Not quite as automatic, but you can have them both open, with media monkey layout as you like, and saves the other hassles.

use it all the time i make a change, manually create a point before having a tweak or installing something, then it will specifically be that point in time.

i honestly don't get why so many people have issues with the utilities that MS put into windows? if they were so shit, why are they there? and who knows better about windows than the people that create it?
yeah i've used my share of 3rd party software, but i always end up back to using the MS software in the end. especially when it comes to performance tweaks, why have a 3rd party version of something that already exists running? just unecessary baggage imo.

however i use opera for web, and removed ie8 as i prefer what it can do, but that is a slight exception.

Cool man. Whatever works for you. Reason i didnt use system restore when i used to use xp was just because i never found i needed it, and was stripping all the features to make xp run with less baggage. Seemed to help it run faster, but then i had a slower machine back then. Didnt have a 3rd party version of it and wasnt complaining about any issues with it. Was just posting a link to a dll to sort the bonjour problem out. Alternatives are always useful as people have different approaches based on their config and preference.

I don't know if this was mentioned before, but try AppZapper. It's a free download for five free zaps, and it finds and deletes all the data related to a program you tell it to kill. Plus it makes a sweet sound effect.
