Rihanna "Only One" (in the world) - Pop is the new techno??

Is it just me, or has the pop scene been slowly stealing away our thunder by becoming more and more electro? I think its great that electronic is growing and that almost everyone knows who tiesto or david guetta (even tho i cant stand guetta) is. And dont get me wrong, i like pop every now and then...but if the day came where pop and electronic/house/techno was mistaken for each other, that would be a very sad day for me. Thoughts? Strong biased opinions? lol

I recall the same lamentation when Sasha was working on remix for Madonna in the late 90s. Electro has been a wildly popular sound for the past few years and it's unsurprising that it should trickle up into the mainstream. What bothers me is most videos I watch on youtube has a lot of fist pumping head bobbers who don't dance

haha, yeah...if i was a club owner, id have my bouncers kick the kids out that dont appreciate good music. its called dance music for a reason! at LEAST jump around alittle. more often then not, people around you are too f-ed up or enjoying the music too much to notice how bad you suck at dancing lol.

Happens every few years or so. EDM based pop will slowly and grotesquely eat itself over the next year until another underground sound gets co-opted leaving your electro safe to enjoy again.

more likely dubstep will go pop and dubstep fans will hate on in just because its popular, and theyll find something else to cling to for dear life.

Last year at school when I DJ'd parties, nobody wanted dubstep, now almost literally every house party I go to is a dubstep party. It really has taken over.

I though Electro was pretty much done anyway?

Sounds like the Trance thing of a few years back. Except this time round, I couldn't tell you what was in the top40.

thats another funny thing about us EDM lovers...and for that matter most non-mainstream fans. they WANT it to stay out of the mainstream. its like they want to be part of an exclusive club of fans lol. the fact that deadmau5 got to "dj" for the VMAs is a huge step for him. even as little of attention that he got, and little air time that he had...his facebook fan page jumped from 500k to a million in like a week! and the fact that he ustreams almost once a week. that is simply unheard of from someone of his "level of fame". anyways, i dont mean to stray from the whole point of this website and its forum...but i just thought it was interesting.

dubstep is pretty sweet stuff, but it seems to be limited to that one sound your talking about space monkey...and its been around in england for a while now if im not mistaken.

I think that glitchy electro house sound from wolfgang gartner and porter robinson is what seems to be exploding in the clubs now. the crowd goes wild in dallas at lizard lounge when they hear wolfgang being played

I was lucky to attend this year's VMAs, and I can you Deadmau5 did squat. Seeing his custom booth was nice, but he didnt performed or really his music much. They could have had any dude up there with a video mouse head on. The music he played was a mix of his and other VMA artists. I think it's funny, he sh!tted on DJ a few years back, and he took a role of one at the VMAs.

IMO, its good and bad that EDM is going mainstream again, that means as DJs, we could get more work to play the music we like instead of mixing stuff we dont like.

Did anyone expect that Dubstep, as a Genre was more discerning or that its main players (or even its underground players) were less into making money or chasing fame.

There are some serioulsy deluded people in the dubstep scene... really.

I love music and I love it when other people love music. Well except for Katy Perry maybe, she molested Elmo and I can't stand people messing with Elmo. . ;)

For me its like this: yes, I want a healthy, thriving, forward-thinking, boundary pushing underground. (its where the real heart and soul of any relevant art form should come from)

Its also a sanctuary for many who originally joined this "tribe" of EDM in the first place (the underground). Its a place to escape and oppose much of the qualities, characteristics and influences the "real world" surrounds people with on a daily basis.

It always sucks to see an art form that is precious and personal to you get raided by the machine (no pun intended). The knee-jerk response to something beautiful being mass-marketed, diluted, whored-out and stripped of any heart will usually be disgust from those who remember "the good-ol days".

But its a cycle and nothing stays entirely pure or "underground" for long. Ask any Punk who was fortunate enough to be part of its early birth or any Raver who experienced the days where there was 1 genre. I think as long as an art form keeps its roots underground and constantly moving forward...you can have the best of both worlds!

As long as record labels can still put out their own style and remain out of the major labels' perview i'll be happy.

Went to my first Subloaded night in Bristol about 6 years ago I think ... the dubstep bug never really bit as something to dance to - the production was nice, but it doesn't work at home, and at the time it was beardstroker central. It's evolving massively at the moment, if you look at the stuff that's kicking around in Bristol at the mo (Peverelist, Guido , Joker, Appleblim, Headhunter, Pinch, Gemmy). Hell, Punch Drunk records have just released their 5th year anniversary album ... so yeah, it's been around for a while round these parts ...

I have genuinely never know a Genre of music that breeds blinkered fans as much as dubstep.

Wow, the reactions to this are seriously surprising me...

When people ask me what I love to spin I say underground (minimal) techno. The reason I add "underground" is because it is underground. However, the reason I like the music isn't because it's underground, it's because it's AWESOME!

Now if tomorrow I woke up, and (minimal) techno was all of a sudden pop, i'd be extremely happy, since this would mean more opportunities to play at gigs, more people who share the same taste in music, more people producing. I'd love it, really.

So I don't understand why "mainstream" upsets you guys... Sure, changing your style to go mainstream is bad (Guetta?) but when a style is liked by a lot of people, there's just more to share.

I agree... I spin electro, electro pop and top 40 with my own little twist alot of the times. So if electro keeps becoming more popular and more played on the radios..then I get to hear more good electro music by top notch producers aaaand I get to play more gigs and people feel my music more..Win/win situation I think.

I have said this before, who cares the style, a good song is a good song. Someone asked me once, what was my preferred style of music, I paused and replied: Style? what style? So I answered, Yes!
At the end of the day mix what you feel and feel what you mix. (techno, house, trance, dance, classical, hiphop, r'n'b, dub, latin, folkloric, ethnic, top 40 hell event the bottom 40 if it has a good beat, who cares...)

Its a good question. In some photos Rihanna looks well fit and when she played at the Radio 1 Big Weekend here she looked damn sexy with that umbrella, but in other pics she looks like shes been chasing parked cars...

Me and my boys used to play a fun (sexist) game called

Fit Butters or Butters Fitty.

Fit means good looking, Butters means ugly.

Many if not most girls (and probably boys) fall in in to one camp or the other. Their either a goodlooking ugly girl or an ugly goodlooking girl.

Rihanna is a fit butters, she looks like she should be ugly but there's something definitely fit about her...
