Downloads in a Restricted Area on Beatport

I suppose this is part rant and part asking advice. When a song on Beatport is outside of the area for which you are allowed to download, what is you alternative.
I understand that this has to do with certain copyright laws. Does this happen often to people on this forum? Is there a way to get around it? Call me salty, but I do get pretty pissed when I can't download a song called New York City Beat and I live in New York. Yes that is technically salty.
Also, how viable an option if buying non-digital releases of these songs, having them shipped ove here, and "wripping" them to your computer. That thought is kinda off the top of my head.

maybe try running beatport thru a proxy site? i duno.

There are a couple different articles on there. The pricing one is actually more current, and has a better alternative to the SOCKS proxy program I suggested in the first article. Remember that you have to choose a country that has a distribution deal with the label your song is on - sometimes this takes a little detective work on discogs.org.

Also, if you're paying with a credit card, you need to stay proxied until you check out, then drop your proxy. Otherwise the CC charge won't go through (I go into this in the second article). But as of a couple weeks ago it still works.

If you're running across these restricted songs alot, it might pay off to invest in a private proxy service. Tracking down a free server that meets your needs is a pain in the ass.

yeah how sucky is it to find some awesome song on beatport only to be told you can't buy it in your territory.

I'm reading nem0nic's link now, it strikes me as funny to go through all that work to have to buy a song but i guess that is the price you have to pay to remain legal and ethical....:D

I usually just ask a friend in another country if there are tracks he wants & can't get, and swap with him.

The fact that so many of us are willing to jump through these hoops of fire just to make sure the artist gets paid for their work should be a very clear message to both Beatport and the artists/labels that they should drop this antiquated policy of territory based digital distribution. Because honestly most of us could find the song in a blog or on a file hosting service MUCH quicker than we could find a working proxy.

It's not Beatport's fault, it's the ridiculously convoluted and incompatible copyright and mechanical licensing restrictions that vary from country to country. What choice does Beatport have but to comply with the laws of the countries it wants to sell tracks in?

What Beatport could do to eliminate the frustration, though, is filter results by IP origin so that unavailable tracks simply don't show up in their offerings. If they can determine through your IP that a track is territory-restricted, then they should be able to filter their catalogue as well.

Beatport could certainly insist that songs sold on their service will either be allowed to be sold to any region. If the offering isn't on a label that has global distribution, then they could offer distribution through their own label. Refusing those 2 options, Beatport could refuse to sell the track. They're certainly big enough to throw a little weight around, and they should be trying to discourage antiquated distribution deals based on physical media.

Of course it is. But they're the only entity right now that services the DJ community and has the ability to push things forward. They're certainly in the position to be able to put pressure on artists and labels.

If they start experiencing the kind of losses the gaming industry is experiencing over issues like SecuROM, they may start wishing they had been more proactive. It's too easy to steal, so the more stumbling blocks a retailer puts in place between a customer and a purchase, the more justification many of them will feel to steal the content. If you weigh this against the benefits of artificially limiting the distribution of digital content through the enforcement of distribution deals that were put in place when music came on physical media, I'm not sure how you justify the practice.

These are often matters of international copyright law, not just handshake deals between labels and retailers, and not just legacy practices from physical distributuion. I'm not blindly defending Beatport, but seriously, do you think they *want* to limit the availability of sales?

Right now, yes I do. They want to make the labels feel like they'll "play ball". This is especially true when trying to attract majors for Beatsource. They don't want to seem like they're willing to compete with the labels that they're currently trying to attract.

I'm not sure if this affects our american brethren but here in new zealand we have a little problem with territory restrictions on certain albums and tracks on Beatport.
What i mean is you can listen to the tracks on the site no problem but when you pry your visa from your girlfriends cold dead hands you can't buy it (and sometimes its only one track on an album which is even more annoying).
I asked beatport about this and they are against it obviously, as it costs them money, and reckon they are having talks with the record companies to rectify this.
The example i can think of is i wanted one of the Darude Vs Blake Leary Remixes "I Ran (So Far Away)" and couldn't get it. (I did eventually, but by clandestine methods arrr me hearties).
In this scenario you have two options
1. Bite the bullet and get a most likely lower quality copy from "some other source"
or
2. Mask your ip to fool Beatport and purchase the tracks legitly

Anyone else having this issue or is it just us?

I have the same isue here in Denmark (europe :)). With a few tracks I run into the territory restrictions.

yah i get the same restrictions as you (am frm brunei), u like a particular track but you cant buy it...sucks big time... but alls not lost...you might find it at other sites like djdownload, traxsource, trackitdown.net etc. but if you really want that particular track badly you can ask an overseas friend to buy it for you. theres another method that was mention this forum if am not mistaken but i cant find it...something about making your ip look like its not from restricted territories...sumone can confirm this?

I had this problem on beatport a bit the first few times I tried to get stuff. It was really frustrating cause I was finding really kickin tracks and couldn't buy em... :(

But I just kept looking and found other kickin tracks.

I must admit that I bought once a track by asking a friend to log in for me and buy it from his country. It worked anyway.

I am in Canada and I have the same issues with Beatport / Beatsource.

I think it is absolutely retarded.
Like the songs that are up there, are they not being posted up on the Beatport website for retail purposes? whats the point of having a song there if you are going to only make it available to only a certain demographic?
I know the problem is that other countries and distributors have rights over Beatport in some of these occasions and the songs.

The one I do not understand is I am in Canada, Deadmau5 is in Canada and I get the territory restrictions on some of his music as well?

Just does not make sense to me! Like they do not want to promote piracy yet they "the record company fat kats" are keeping the music out of the fans hands and money from the artists dinner table.

Techniques like neumonics are great and I myself have employed that technique with Beatport and other country specific services.
However I would say not everyone out there is going to understand or even realize this can be done.

I think this issue should just become remedied.

I think in time you may start to see many artists who get a name out there and known soon take the same route as Trent Reznor of NIN and fulfill the contracts with the Labels and then drop them all together and Release their music on their own.
I see this trend on some up and coming artists who start their own Digital Label (ie... Splendid Imaginings, Rottun Recodings etc... )

I would be super into Nemonic writing an article about this on the website if your into it? Perhaps a 3 parter:

why territory restrictions suck
why they are there in the first place (get beatports side)
how to get around them

And I would be very willing to do the article, including a revised method for bypassing them for Beatport's new site (I would need to research this). But until the end of April, I'm totally covered up with work.

This has been an issue I feel strongly about, and it's unfortunate that retailers and labels make it so hard for legitimate users to pay money for music that they end up going to RapidShare instead. It's pretty stupid, really. When I look at the reasons labels are using for artificially restricting distribution of digital files over the internet, the over-riding theme is greed. And retailers like Beatport, who are in a position of some power, shrug helplessly and point their fingers at the labels.

I understand the rationale Beatport has for looking in the other direction - they don't want to rock the boat. Doing something radical like establishing their own (region-free, online only) label, trying to force labels to drop the restrictions, etc will likely piss off a few folks and cause them to leave. But I personally think that I would rather have a store with fewer artists but a more accessible catalog then the current system. And that's why I've moved Beatport from my first shopping stop to my last. Over the last year, I've probably spent less than $100 USD there, where before I would spend $20-40 a month.

It's too bad, because I really like the company. I WANT to shop there, because I think they are doing alot of things right. But territory restrictions on digital files is such a regressive policy that I can't forgive it.

I'll start dabbling around on the new site and seeing if alot has changed since their update in terms of proxy use.

I remember having this issue recently (actually with one of my favorite tracks I just listed in the "favorite tracks" thread).

It was Mario Piu "Serendipity" (Mas Mix). Its a very rare track (as far as I could find on digital anyway). I finnaly found a place to buy it and *SLAP* (territory restriction) SHART!!

So I searched around and ended up going the proxy route....VERY convoluted & it was interesting to say the least but I made the purchase.....then realized after all that trouble it was the wrong mix :mad:

So I ended up getting in touch with Mario himself and asking him for help. He actually ended up GIVING me the track! Friggn awesome guy!!!

DJDownloads and Juno get a lot of my business. Other than that, I generally bounce around between a long list of sites if I'm looking for something.
