I was just wondering if anyone else on here has same issues.
I have live in Chicago and have been a dj for over 15 yrs, I started using traktor with a vci 100 3 yrs ago. I do admit before the 1.4 firmware I used the dvs more. In Chicago there is a misconception about traktor in general, most people here think that if you use Traktor dvs or with a controller that both have sync options. They state that they would never use traktor but would use serato because it is not cheating. Some people here state they would only use vinyl, I think they are all living in the past and will be left behind, because they don't press much vinyl anymore. I have nothing to prove but just get sick of dealing with people that make you feel like you need to state to them that you started out on vinyl. This is my experience I was just wondering if it is like this every where or just here in Chicago...
Haters gonna hate, nothing you can do about it. Keep doing what you do and slowly the haters will die out.
Let 'em hate! I use sync all the time and I can beatmatch in my sleep.
This topic is getting so oooooold.
Doesn't surprise me...that's Chicago for you. Don't worry about them. Anyone who doesn't respect the craft of DJing for what it is is a tool. You're just trying to do your thing, haters gonna hate.
I was DJing at a club a few weeks ago and this guy was dogging me for using Traktor and a controller. Of course he was a Serato user. So I dogged him for not carrying around his records anymore. He tells me I'm taking the easy way out...isn't he for switching to digital? He just happened to be controlling his computer with something else and beatmatching. I also uncovered that he doesn't pay for any of his music. Who's the bigger shyster--the DJ who pays for his tunes and uses sync or the DJ who rips off the artists regardless of his rig? Not that it applies to your situation, but it goes to show that anyone willing to talk shit about sync is probably an all-around douche.
Ask 'em why they don't have a gig that night, if they're so much better than you.
I don't understand DJs who use DVS, don't scratch and use sync. Why have the vinyl at all?
what most people forget is, it's all about the music and not the medium. It's 2011 and not 1984
I live in Chicago to and can attest to the same thing. I'm also a traktor user, and an S4 user, and almost everyone here is a serato user, or just cdj, mostly because blah blah industry standard in the US. The funny thing is I never use sync just because sometimes I haven't beatgridded my tracks right and they can be way off or the bpm is off. Anyways people make beatmatching out to be the only thing a DJ should be worried about, yes it is essential, but its not the only thing, visual aids, syncing, whatever just allows more time or the DJ to be creative. Controllerism is defiantly frowned upon here, which is too bad, but its the way it is.
to look cool!!!
Yeah I don't see the point in that, but I will add that using real gear vs. a controller is a funner experience. Even when using sync, there's something about using a real mixer and decks as opposed to a VCI-100 lets say. Even if the music output sounds the same, I'm enjoying it more. One of the reasons I still hold on to my NS7 even though Itch is pretty bland is for this reason. A controller that feels like a gear. I hop on the S4 aftwords and it's just not the same. Sync or no sync.
To answer the OP. Here in Miami most of the trendy joints are like that. Serato Rulez and that's what real DJ's play on. Now once you get to the mega clubs (Space, Mansion, LIV) those clubs bring in so many huge headliners and many of them play on Traktor so those guys don't care. The bias if from the jo bloe local DJ.
waa waa who cares. at some point it's not going to matter what you play on as long as you rock the party. so midi DJs just need to stop whining about this shite and worry about becoming better DJs.
that said, if you want to play at a certain club that only has CDJs you better learn how to use CDJs. whining about how they won't allow controllers isn't going to help. it's THEIR club. you'll need to adapt to their standards.
Could always do the Mitsubishi route and put on a mix CD and mime with the CDJs
Tbh doing an efx combo and beat juggling and making it all work together is alot more of a skill than matching 2 tracks up and a hell of alot more interesting
as pony said if you ain't scratching or doing crazy routines i dont see the point in just using DVS just to fit in
BREAK THE MOLD!
it only sounds worse if your shit at it and just button bashing
same with beatmatching so many times i hear people chasing the beat
and so many times people over use efx
I.M.O its still a better skill
haha i agree!!
i personally cant stand beatjuggling!! id much rather a shit beatmatcher to a shit beat juggler!! - if i HAD to choose!!! Nothing wrong with just mixing 2 nice tracks!
And if anyone HAS to respond to controller haters a quick sharp FUCK OFF cant hurt!
This same or similar post comes up every other week. And everyone makes the same comments. Rinse, repeat...
it's all good. Whatever floats your boat.
I love my controllers, using them is fun as shit....but I've yet to see a controller performance that rivals a good DMC routine.

A few clubs in my local town in ireland used to allow laptop dj's play untill one night there were two dj's off a main radio station that were getting fairly well payed to peform that night and as the manager went by them in this pub/club the music stopped... What they were doing was checking there facebooks and forgot they were sposed to be djing which got laptops pretty much banned from the town after that.
this story is so boring...i mean...come on, im sure that everyone who says that ''sync'' is cheating cant even beatmatch!Afterall , if you dont have a clue about whats goin on, not even ''sync'' can help you!
so YES, i USE sync ALL THE TIME, cause i know HOW to use it,and im not talking just clickin it...
ive stopped beatmatching...so what, doing so all this years and with the edge of technology , KNOWING how to beatmatch , helps you do OTHER great things!
also im sure all of this guys dont even know how to EQ..so...yeah...''beeeeeeatmatch''' wooooooow....
talk about evolution...yeah...go wash your clothes on hand..
I think next time this thread comes up we should all have a nice little role play and argue against computer aided beat syncing.
Personally I reckon it looks alot more "pro" to the audience. and visual appearance is a massive part of DJing, I'd imagine the audience would rather see a DJ who "looks" "pro" than some guy playing with a controller. just my oppinion, and yes i love my controllers and i've never used vinyl.
So hmmm. Let's see - matching two bpm #'s in Serato, clearly indicated on the screen, along with parallel waveforms in case the bpm is off, grand total time spent beatmatching 10 seconds tops. And Traktor is cheating?
IMHO, if you really feel the need to be "legitimate and professional", don't use a screen at all. That's the only dj who has a reason to say they're working hard on beatmatching.
And for the record, I enjoy Serato and Traktor. Advice when taking heat: keep a smile on your face, and educate people when you can. And rock the house. THAT'S what matters.
Man, if I had a nickel for ever "sync button" thread I've ever seen...I'd have a lot of nickels.
Fact is, the only people who care about what you do when you DJ are other DJs. If you use the sync button, GREAT! It should give you more time to do other, more cerative things with your mixing. At the end of the day, as long as what's coming out of the speakers is mint and the people on the floor are dancing, that's all that matters. Because, in the end, it's all about the music.
I'd rather go see a DJ mashing the sync button all night but has song selection skills and is creative with phrasing, effects, etc than a DJ who can flawlessly beatmatch manually but plays every song out and doesn't have good song flow.
I just don't care of what other DJ, promoter, dumbass think. I might have a couple of comments 'bout tuprerware toys, Sync and other stupidities... however, I've never lost a gig because of what I use, I get gig because of my talent... and this since 29 years now... Period.
See my sig...
I pretty much know where I stand, and I just needed to vent my anger. So at the end of the day I sleep well knowing that facebook has a delete button. By the way my dj name is D3RKIN for those of you who don't know me and this is my website www.wix.com/d3rkin/d3rkin check it out I have my past ustream shows on there along with mixes and a forum called Midi Movement to post mixes, events, and your info for bookings. So feel free to utilize it, and you can follow my promotional crew @ listn.to/discopimpsproductions.
Thanks for your support....
"We use industry standard equipment and like I said, we set it up once and we don't change it the whole night. We don't want to accomodate other hardware/software. When we do smaller venues and have seperate rooms we have no problem allowing DJs who use less-popular software to use the second room because it's less dense and less-likely to have any issues. We've had issues in the past with using DJs' with other software and had issues with dead silence and many other problems that have required the music to stop and time to figure out what's wrong. We choose to not go through that again and require all DJs to use Macbooks and Serato. In the past we've had a DJ come in with a windows PC and had it crash during his live set, can't have that happen again as well. "
got that from a promoter im supposed to dj for Sat
