controller or mixer?

Hello everyone,

Here is my question, I have a AUDIO 6 DJ and an DDM 4000 with two Kontrol One, but I'm starting to feel a limit to the possibilities of Traktor because I can mix only 3 deck compared to the 4 I have on my mixing table . I will soon replace my table, and I was wondering if using a controller 4 Chanel was not better than taking a traditional table.
I really like the DN-MC 6000, which with my Kontrol One give me a control over my 4 chanel.
But first I want your opinion

It depends.....

If you mix CD's as well as digital audio, you will probably need a mixer to use when you don;t have the laptop etc.

If you only using digital, no reason to use external mixer....unless you like mixing externally.

I only work in TRAKTOR I have two controllers but no CD .

What you recommend for a budget of 400 to 700 pounds ?

Sell everything except one of the X1s, buy an S4 or MC6000 and you'll be sorted. If you only use traktor, the S4's one to one layout will be very helpful.

sell your audio 6 and buy an audio 10, stick with the mixer and the midicontroler!
no midicontroler will give you what a club mixer does :)

depends if you´re comfortable spinning without jogwheels. i for myself love to mix with a midicontroler and an external mixer. like a said some weeks ago. using the mixer in a club is always good, cause then you´ll always be present for the crowd. a lot of dj´s just using midicontroler are mostly at one end of the stage not using the mixer. but when mixing external you´ll always have the guaranty that you are in the middle of the booth and the crowd will recognize that. dunno if you get my point...

I'd prefer a mixer over controller, BUT thats just because a controller feels like too much of a downgrade.. (well at least the S4 did)

If you already have Traktor and are looking for a controller I'd say get a MC6000.
I have a sc2000 and x1600 and both are QUALITY and have great functionally..
I would have to imagine the MC6000 is quality as well.

I already have two controllers in the same genre as dn sc-2000, ONE DJTECH KONTROL I'm happy with, but the DN-MC 6000 is in my project.

External mixers, if of proper quality, offer so much more than a midi controller IMO.

like i stated earlier: sell the audio6 and check ebay/djtt buy sell/craiglist/ etc for a used audio8 or buy an audio 10 and you are good to go

I want a 16 channel mixer but I only use iTunes. I know how OP feels.

not that I can only mix 2, but I will use my DDM4K in MIDI mode to start the mix in 4 channel

whats the sc2000 like to mix with? does it get a bit tricky trying to keep two tracks in sync with one jog operating both?

I love it!
I only ever need to beatmatch one tune into the mix at a time..
its awesome being able to switch effects units separately from the decks.
It has 4 banks, which can hold 2 decks and 2 FX pages on each, so their is A LOT of room for custom mapping.

The only place that I kind of run into trouble is during quick transition where I want to use a sample deck.
Lets say I want to spin back one, play a sample and play the next track.
You could easily setup a custom page for this scenerio,
(or I could even map some things to the x1600 to make it work)
BUT.. to give me more options at the tips of my fingers I picked up a midi fighter.
this way I can do instant grat. type stuff or have access to sample decks or other cues..
Its not a necessary add-on, just more for convenience!

ALSO.. the pitch "lock" mode lets you switch between 2 decks..
it won't read the pitch until its back to the spot where you last left it..
which is really nice when going back and fourth between tracks.

a real mixer. Just sold my S4 today and ordered the dn x1600. Won't ever look back. There is just something about the midi controller that doesn't suit me. Too wide, but too small, if you catch my drift. I love the feel of vinyl now since I got my feet wet and bought my technics. Absolutely love it. Threw some old Jethro Tull LP's on the last night and just sat there loving every second of it.

After getting my hands on an S4 I just couldn't do it..
I had to stick with the x1600

hopefully my budget will open up and I'll be able to get some new TTs soon.
..its been about a week since I sold mine and I miss them already!

i'm fed up with my mixtrack, want a PROPER bit of kit now but also would love something that would sit nicely alongside inclub mixer so i dont have fiddle around too much during set up

gonna pop into my local tomorrow morning and mess around with the sc2000 and X1 :cool:

Why'd you get rid of them? I don't think I'll ever give up my techs. They might be big and heavy but I love them. There is just nothing like the feel of a spinning vinyl record. You just cant get that with a jog wheel.

Channel VU meters alone make external mixers vastly superior, imho...and that's only one of several aspects.

Yeah I sold my S4 a couple of months ago and got an Ecler - much better for me personally - the s4 just feels a bit cheap and unprofessional imo - great starter package though.

Was thinking about the dn x1600 - sure is a nice mixer ;)

Well.. I was tight on cash.. needed/wanted a new laptop
They also were a lot to lug around.. and away at school I don't a have a car. so now if I need to I can just throw everything in a backpack and be good to go.
also.. Its a tight fit getting everything into the car to go to and from school.
my b52 matrix 2000 takes up most of the back! then I have clothes, lights, records, other music gear.
I have a feeling that I'll probably end up buying a pair soon..
I'll probably just save up and keep some cash on the side until I come across a good deal.

another thing.. one place I played out had a weak floor and my needles kept skipping with people jumping.
and another time I was playing outside and it was windy and blew my needle across the record.

I'd still pick TTs over controllers any day..
BUT in my current position its best for me to use controllers.
or at least have controllers as an option(portable and don't have to worry about where you play)

Quick question, does the DN x1600 sum/limit to 0db at the master output or do I still have to watch the line level faders to make sure I'm not going hot? And is the cue/mix equal volume? One thing I absolutely HATED about the S4 was that the cue/mix volume was worlds different and made it really annoying to try and listen to the pre-mix in my headphones.

Also, do you miss a dedicated filter for each channel?

Not too sure what you mean by the first 2 questions.
Master peaks above +10db ??
There is a mix knob for cue and master, and a volume.. then you have a button for split cue.

There are many ways of going about filters..
I honestly prefer the built in denon filter..
which is implemented very nice.. How I use it..
You have the main dry/wet effects knob.. if I just want a filter I leave that all the way dry..
then you have the parameters knobs.. WHICH I guess you could say filters the effect.. so if you have an effect going you can highpass/lowpass that effect.. if you have no effects going it just acts as a slightly wet peak filter.
Then you have the parameters on/off button.. which turns the slightly wet filter in to a totally wet filter.
all you do is select which track you want to filter!
if you find you need to use a filter on multiple tracks, you can assign the MIDI param knobs (you get 4 banks of 4 knob/encoders and 4 buttons)
OR you can assign an EQ knob via midi mode over each channel..
I personally just use the built-in x1600's and occasionally traktors via the sc2000

no I know this, but some mixers (the eclers comes to mind if I remember correctly) will limit total output at the master to +0db when set properly without you having to really worry about fucking with gain for each song.

I know that on a PA system you'll run straight to the limiter/compressor but I'd rather not clip the fuck out of everything. It's not a big deal really, just a curious question.

And on my second question: I know there is a split knob. But at 50/50 on my S4 the cue gain was MUCH greater than that of the master and you couldn't get a true comparative gain/level reading by cueing and those LED vu meters blow on the S4 (and yes I know traktor has auto-gain). On some mixers (I never got a chance to actually get my hands on an x1600 since no one carries real mixers anymore and they're pretty rare to begin with) cue/master split at 50/50 is ACTUALLY 50/50. Now maybe it was just a problem with my S4.

I usually use meters to cue gain, then adjust as I bring the track in.. BUT pure 50/50 seems right.

you can mix 4 decks with an audio 6... run decks a and b in stereo and decks c and d in mono configured to use the L and R channel of the 5th and 6th output and use a Y cable to the mixer so it is converted to mono and comes out of both L and R on each channel.
