Fix to allow Traktor played tracks to play in Ableton

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me what i do about tracks that have been played in Traktor not being able to play in ableton???

Aparantly its something to do with the tags that Traktor writes to the MP3.

Pleeease help

I'm tearing my hair out here, just wasted an evening getting Ableton set up to fix some drifting tunes and now i get this problem :(

I guess first things first... How do you strip out all traktor tags?? Tried the deleteing from traktor andchecked the option to remove tags but this seems not to have worked as track still won't play in ableton.

Then 2nd ... Once I've managed the above how do I stop this happening in the future???

Surely someone else has experienced this???

I experienced this just the other day actually, the NI boards havent been of much help either.

How can this have not come about sooner as we have people using both Traktor and Ableton.

Basically it looks like all my tracks I've used have been permenantly damaged now and i can no longer use them in ableton without obtaining a totally fresh copy of the track !!!

What did all you people do who reccoemnd fixing tracks that drift in ableton. Surely these have been played in Traktor so will be "traktor tagged" so will not be able to be played in ableton to fix it.

Proper confused on this one :(

Update!

Just read on the NI forums that turning off analyse on load and set beatgrid will stop this. The only issue i have with that is does that mean you can't then store cue points or beatgrids in my tracks?

I thought Traktor stored all this information to a seperate file / database ? :(

No, Traktor does add a Traktor-specific byte at the end of the file. Dunno if I'm explaining this correctly, but it does make a file change.

Question for all you Ableton users:
Since Ableton only uses wav files, why is this becoming an issue? Are you just loading your mp3s and then forcing Ableton to convert them? How's your performance by doing this? Do you load an insane number of tracks like Moldover does, or are you loading them just as you need them?

Ableton doesnt only use wav .. your behind the times theer it started using mp3s from version 5 onwards i think it was. :) Good times :)

I originally thought it was a problem with my mp3 encoder at first until i googled the problem and found out i wasnt the only one having the problem. Most of the time im just recording snip bits, because im using audio routing i just need to hit record. Makes is less of a pain, but its still a pain either way.

yup .. i cant believe there is no solution to this as at present this means, as far as i can tell that when i play a track in tracktor thats it !! Thats all i can do with it from then on ?

Do i really need to duplicate my collection and have one copy just for use in traktor ?

I still dont undersdtand how thes epeople that have advised fixing drifting tracks in ableton have done it, as to me it seems that this isnt possible due to this issue.

That's not exactly true.

Ableton converts mp3's into wav's and stores them in it's decoding cache.

Yeah, it helps to read up on product you use so you can understand them.

So, in order to avoid this, why not have your Ableton-used files already setup as wav's? Traktor can't touch them (as you can't really add anything to a wav because they aren't tag-able), and Live will perform much better without having a huge decoding cache.

PS I'm not behind the times :)

Metadata has become a very complex area because there are many different entities that store track information - the standard ID3 tags themselves and proprietary tags written by iTunes or Traktor, the iTunes Library or the Traktor Collection. So it can be confusing to work out which of these entities “override” the other.

For this reason we have decided to give the highest priority to the standard ID3 tags when available, because they are the most common denominator among all tagging applications. For information going beyond the standard, we rely on extended tags written by Traktor Pro into the files.

We decided for the latest ID3 version 2.4 for Traktor Pro so this should ideally be used.

Regarding MP4 files, the bit rate is not stored in a tag, it is retrieved by the decoder. The MP4 decoder in Traktor Pro has a bug where the bit rate is not calculated correctly. Because this decoder is licensed from a third party, we can't make any promises about when this bug will be fixed.

I want to fix a drifting track

The track is downloaded as MP3

I then try and grid it in traktor .. can't

Take it accross to ableton to fix

Ableton won't accept it ...

Where now ?



EDIT: If i remove the track from collection and use option to delete the Traktor tags then that works ... but only as long as i havent imported it into my collection with tags already :(

Hey Gav, my link was to show you that yes, Traktor does change the file by adding something to it.

Now, what do you mean Ableton won't accept it? You can't just drag the file into Ableton? What error are you getting?

Ahhh right yes sorry i get you now.

When you drag it into ableton you get a message stating something like directshow cannot encode this file.

Its definately to do with the tags that traktor adds. :(

i'm not pulling up any results from our trusty Google friend...maybe you can grab the exact error message and post it here?

Or even on Ableton's forums...

i cant copy it as it appears at the bottom for only a few seconds

I know what the problem is its definately due to the traktor tags. I need to remove them from some files.

The prob is i deleted a load of tracks from my collection without selecting the remove the tags also option, and when you import them back in and then remove them again but this time selecting the option to also remove traktor tags it obviousley doesnt clear the tags added from the first time they were imported.

I guess what i need is something that will totally strip all my tags including the hidden traktor ones

Any suggestions anyone?

Ok managed to allow tracks to be played in ableton by stripping the tags using mp3tag

however that means ive now stripped all my info re que points etc ... havent i ???

Not got time to check at the min as on my way out but that proooves 100% its def the tags ... how rubbish is that !

Ok yup it seems that the only way to sort this at the min is to not allow traktor to write to the mp3s but this means you can't store any cue points or beatgrids. Hmmmmmmm..... You can stop traktor analysing them by changing your mp3s to read only

Also it appears that traktor sometimes does not strip its info even when you tell it to. Stuffed in this case as unless I can find out exactly which tag is is that traktor is updating then I have to strip the file of all its tags to get it to work again

Anyone know which tags it updates????

Ok although i seem like i'm on a one man mission here and no one else seems to be having this issue I will keep you all updated on my findings.

Ok after the last post i worked out that even if you change all tracks to "read only" you can still store cue points beatgrids the lot. This must mean that the info is stored in both the database and the id3 tags to. Which i find a bit wierd. Whats the need to store it in two places?

What i then found out was that it now appears that its not a particular tag thats the problem its the fact that traktor updates all tages to id3 v2.4 so trying to find the particular tag is pointless. All tags have to be downgraded to 2.3 for ableton to be able to use the track.

So there you go ... hope thats of some use to people who are having the same issues at any point. Not sure what to do from here.

I guess one of the main things i think ive learnt is i dont need to delete all tags to get it to work just downgrading them to v2.3 should allow ableton to use the track again.

This can be done in batch using mp3tag which is a free app

I'll be back witha anything else i find.

I found the solution just downloading the latest version of quicktime and installing it. All the mp3 become again readable by ableton

Is that because you associated mp3's to quicktime though and it changed all your tags??

I think the reason why TP stores the info in two places is this:
- if the file is read only then TP needs to store the info somewhere; in this case its database;
- if the file is not read only then it stores info also in the ID3 Tag of the file, so when you copy that file to another computer, reinstall the OS or you lose the library you still have the beatgrids and cue points.

I don't use quiktime I open it only once to do this trick. I found this solution in another forum. I use winamp to open mp3. I don't know how does it work, may be QT installs some codec.
I could't open mp3 with ableton on two different computers, after I installed QT and run it one time, magically ableton starts do play mp3 :confused::D

Well i had the same problem... i fixed it by converting the mp3 files to 320kbps using a converter. try it... should sort your problem :)

i experienced this issue and literally copied and pasted my tracks from my traktor library into a separate library, which i deemed ableton tracks. i can only load a track from the ableton tracks file though, nothing connected to traktor. worked for me though!

this... all you have to do is open quicktime once then close and never even look at it again, it just needs to be there
