I noticed that there was a lot of interest in the Bass Music/Deep House thread, and I thought I'd start a thread based on another form of music thats been catching a lot of peoples ears recently, the dark heavy driving Berghain techno sound.
Artists and DJs like Marcel Dettman, Ben Klock, Pfirter and Chris Liebing are really helping to drive this scene at the moment and I thought we should have a thread on it!

Lovely sound - check out Marcel Fengler, Len Faki, Norman Nodge & Andre Galluzzi on the Berghain series, as well as Panorama Bar (Prosumer particularly), and of course Ostgut Ton.
Interested in this, I've really been getting into techno in the past several months and I can't get enough of it but I still feel kind of lost getting familiar with the current scene and what's happening with the genre. Definitely like the stuff from CLR and I've been wondering about production techniques for it to get that dark sound and that warehouse atmosphere. I would love to know what kind of FX they are using.
Not sure if it fits in here or is 'berghain' but here's a video from a CLR/Chris Liebing warehouse party a few weeks ago.

God I wish they did shit like this in the US more often...
I guess I'm better off than most people in the U.S. since I can go to Space Miami to the Techno Loft every weekend and hear solid techno from 10pm to the afternoon the next day. Not many cities in the US with any sort of techno scene I know of...

I think you'll enjoy here in The Netherlands, Xone! Every week there are plenty of techno parties to pick. I went to one last saturday :). The Techno king from The Netherlands is in my opinion Speedy J, a legend, who often teams up with Chris Liebing under the moniker of Collabs. A track that's been heard for about 3/4 years now and still is hot, is this one:

It's amazing how Speedy J is able to achieve such a sound... Stomping, just stomping. If you want to know some decent Techno artists, labels, tracks, hook me up because my list is way too long for writing it down in the early morning (it's 08:30 AM here).

CLR sound is very different from the typical Berghain stuff you here. It's more polished digital techno, Bergain is very washy high reverb massive bass and dub influences.
I like both, CLR podcasts have a lot of the Berghain guys on there as well, check it out on CLR.net or iTunes
Adam Beyers Drumcode would be more similar to CLR as well if you like that sound.
Len Faki is a friggin monster, I seriously like almost all of tunes
Redshape is another favourite, like most of his stuff but he can get very housey but tough house.

really brutal industrial techno, but so sick. copped this on wax a while ago, play it all the time (takes a bit of getting into..)
I mentioned CLR as some of the more recent releases by Xhin and Lucy and by Tommy Four Seven have been more of that Berghain sound, quite far from the Drumcodey sound, which i love also. Absolutely adore Len Faki, it was actually seeing him at I Love TechnoQuote:

I dont think so its just one of the many names being bandied about for music like this, Dub Techno and Experimental Techno are two others as well I think. Its seems to be the Berghain sound because most of its residents like Ben Klock and Marcell Dettmann are spinning it, so I've heard quite a few people calling it Berghain Techno!
It's definitely a sub genre even though the guys that make it play it wouldn't like to say so.
From what I read it's mostly because of the clubs acoustics, it supposed to sound amazing
Shifter47 love uk techno, it sort of made me stop listening to techno at some point but the guys like surgeon, Ben sims and Regis have definitely made a resurgence.

If anyone produces in this thread, would you be interested in checking out my tune? I havent mastered it yet, because quite frankly I've never gotten to the mastering stage before, and if anyone who has a clue would give it a listen and maybe give me a few pointers? :)
I've removed that link after i mastered it a bit, and here is the result!
I generally keep my techno dark, dubby, hard, and sometimes deep... just depends on where I am playing as to which direction I go... the techno genre is very wide.

I've got two podcasts that I listen to on a regular basis, CLR and Lance's . Interestingly enough I don't play a whole lot of straight up techno as I tend to swing to the overly moody deep tech house stuff. Is there a more specific genre name for that? Techno was my first love though and holds a special place in my heart and this berghain sound is nice.
In saying that, however, they seem to throw back to a lot of schranz and stuff in their non-berghain sets, its still very heavy but its almost like they play 'to berghain' and when they play other places their real personality shines through! I would agree with the club's 'sound' almost being predictable, but when you take the people who are influential on the sound out of that location their personal style shows more and makes it extremely interesting!Quote:
