I will start with an easy one 2001 a space odyssey
Star Wars IV, V, VI < all
after this it would be Event Horizon for me
It's got to be alien then aliens.
Tron, The original 1980's movie, not Tron Legacy.
Blade Runner
One film which is new to me is but amazing is Solaris (original Russian movie 1972) it's a slow film but visually rich and worth it just for an amazing freeway scene in Japan as an example of a future city.
I discovered it after finding a copy of the soundtrack which is truly epic.
Have you seen anything else by Tarkovsky?
My personal Top Ten....
1. Blade Runner.
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
4. Star Wars - V
5. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
6. Planet of the Apes
7. Aliens (1986)
8. The Matrix
9. The Day the Earth Stood Still
10. Back To The Future
I watched Aliens again the other week - what a top film that is. I know it's not the pinnacle of cinema or anything but as an action movie it's absolutely spot on! The characters, script, acting - all great. Some of the current batch of action movies should take note!!
I agree Alien probably a better film overall though.
Did you like Prometheus?
Is there a scene in it where the astronaut is in a spaceship looking down at solaris and it's a kind of "sea" and thinks he sees a baby in it or something? Trying to figure out if I watched this a few years ago... very suspenseful and bit creepy...
Incidentally, recently watched the Clooney remake and really enjoyed it.
Event Horizon for sure!
Attack of the Killer tomatoes !!

i forgot to mention:
Spaceballs and Starship Troopers
#allhailthebrainbug ;)
^ haha yes! Caught troopers at the pictures when it came out. Nothing sexier than denise richards power chucking on the big screen :)
- Equilibrium
- Dredd (2012 version)
- Barbarella - Don't remember the plot, but remember enjoying it all the same, weird that :p!
- Independence Day is a guilty pleasure of mine - don't hate me.
- Serenity
I'd be hard pressed to choose between A Scanner Darkly and The Clone Returns Home. Honorable mentions to Dark Star and The Host. More will probably occur to me shortly.
I won't but I might look at you a bit funny from here on out. :p
Edit.. And of course District 9.
I forgot about "They Live" with Roddy Piper...awesome fight scene...
One of my favs :)
1. Alien
2. The Fifth Element
3. Blade Runner
Bladerunner - simply for the awesome soundtrack

I can't believe no one has mentioned Oblivion it has dick head in it but it's still a good film.
Ya, pretty cool flick if you don't figure it out in the first 5 mins :p
A few that may or may not been mentioned:
Moon - Go watch this, go watch it now. Absolutely amazing film.
12 Monkeys
A Scanner Darkly
Demon Seed
Brazil
Also +1 to Jester for mentioning Primer, excellent film, still need to watch Upstream Colour (same director, main actor)
Some Honourable Mentions:
Dark City
Pacific Rim - just fun, don't try to take it seriously, that's not the point
Looper
The Chronicles of Riddick
Pandorum
Paul
Iron Sky - Nazis on the Dark Side of the Moon. It's hilarious.
Mars Attack......... :tongue_smilie:
Staying away from the obvious Star Wars franchise I'd say 12 Monkeys, Moon is pretty epic too.
