Looking for software that can play through my collection, but at a set BPM

I typically record my house podcasts at slower speeds. Some as low as 112bpm. Consequentially, some songs sound better than others at this speed.

I'd love a way to listen through my collection at a set BPM. For example, it would be awesome if I could pull up Rekordbox/VirtualDJ/etc, select my entire library (or at least a playlist), and have it play through. That's not asking much for any music library, but I'd love if the BPM could be fixed instead of changing per track.

Can anyone think of any work-arounds to do this, and in which systems? Something so I don't have to load each individual track and then set the BPM?

Caveat: this isn't for live-DJ'ing. This is for simply listening to my tracks at home while I cook, for example. Just getting to know my collection better.

It sounds like Cruise Mode is the part that will play all the tracks in the playlist?

I was confusing cruise mode for record action when read.... I'll have to try cruise mode sometime for a mobile gig looks like could be interesting

Yes, cruise mode will just play through all of the songs in a playlist in order.

I use cruise mode all the time for mobile gigs. I've got a few different early night playlists set up depending on the age range of the crowd and the event, all about 3 hours longs. I then just select the appropriate one, load the first track to deck a, second track to deck b, play deck a and then hit the cruise button. Traktor will then automatically crossfade between then songs. You can change the time of the crossfade in the settings. Note that the crossfade only works properly when mixing in internal mode, in external mode it just plays the tracks with a bit of an overlap, and this is the only reason I use internal mixing.

You can also set fade in and fade out markers and Traktor will then just play between the two when in cruise mode. Noce for when you have long intros or outros you don't want to play.

You can try these to see if they do what you want.

You can download an addon to Winamp, which allows you to set the tempo. Can't remember the name, but you can google it :)

Yeah will have to look at that.... As of now I normally bring 2 setups with me to mobile gigs one for my vdj autopilot most tracks and another for when I get to where I can actually mix.... Having traktor runing on one would be optimal... Can you resume and it pickup where you left off in the playlist after disabling or does it just restart...

Alternatively i assume if I load the next track in other deck and hit cruise it should just pickup from that track I assume?

According to a answer to a question asked on their forums:
"change the bpm at the beginning of the timeline and then don't add any tempo markers. all consequent tracks will be sped up or slowed down to match the (master) tempo. btw: make sure your transitions are set to beatmix full or something similar."

If you turn off cruise mode it will just continue to play the current song. When resuming/starting it's a bit finicky sometimes if you don't have 2 tracks directly one after another in a playlist loaded into the decks, then it will just carry on playing from whichever playlist the first track is in. I always make sure that I have 2 tracks loaded that are next to each other in a playlist before engaging cruise.

NOTE: I still use 2.1.2 at my gigs, so this may have changed in more recent versions...

I'm a CDJ-and-Mixer kind of guy. I wouldn't say no to spending the $100 to try it out. Just curious if there's a light version, for example.

Yes Traktor LE is bundled with some NI hardware I think but don't think you can buy it - try the Buy/Sell thread - someone must have a copy somewhere - or you can download a demo from NI's site.

I have a Xone-92 and two CDJ-900's. Curious if it might be time for me to try out Traktor. Any idea what's possible with that setup?

You can aggregate the soundcards in the CDJ's on your macbook and they have HID support, so basically they perform similar to using them without a computer.
So set up as normal but with USB from each CDJ into your macbook and off you go :)

The advantage is all your music at hand and if you buy a cheap controller you can access other features of Traktor depending on your style - have a look at the F1 or X1 - they come with a voucher you could put towards buying Traktor Pro.

What about using the Xone 92? I imagine that would be replaced by Traktor..?

You can but as stated above it only works with internal mixing mode for cruise control... Correction it will work but without the cross fade effect

No - you use the mixer as normal - instead of the 'sound' coming from a cd it somes from the laptop - everything else will work pretty much as it does now.

if youre wanting to try traktor for DJing get the traktor audio6 package, comes with full version of traktor and can be used with great results with your current set up. i think its about 300 but its the cheapest way to integrate your existing set up.


if you just want to use the playlist funtion you could opt for the traktor audio 2 which i think is 100, it would not be useful with cdjs or mixer , but you could get fulll traktor functionality with a control surface or a qwerty keyboard.

Awesome, thanks for spelling that out.

I'm still really new when it comes to mixing on anything other than two 1200's or CDJ's. When you have a moment, would you mind explaining what that setup would look like in real-life terms? For example, how I would set it up, how I'd mix on it, what the benefits are over two cdj's and a mixer, etc.

According to this article, I'm not sure what the Audio 6 would give me.

Bonus: what gear could be added, like the K1 that I keep seeing.

the difference between the a6 and the scarlet is that the a6 comes with a full traktor license.

the benefit of the a6 over the a2 is that it gives you enough ins and outs to make controlling traktor decks from your cdjs possible.

and yah adding something like a k1 would give you some real estate to map out to control more of traktor without the keyboard and trackpad. such as browsing tracks.

having CDJ 900s and a xone, i cant think of a lot that traktor is going to offer you other than control of more decks at once,(but you do need something to control them) and some effects.you already have the wave form views, loops and hot cues, as well as high portability of music collection,( which are bigger sellers to DJs coming from a pure vinyl background.

I do have a MacBook with my collection in iTunes, including Rekordbox and MixedInKey.

I've never used Traktor and I won't need more than two decks, so you're correct there. That said, I think I'd enjoy having extra screen real estate (larger waveform, quicker track selection), the 'better' master tempo (sounds cool, not sure if it works much better than the CDJ's), and Sync. I can beatmatch fine, but I wouldn't say no so I could begin learning other tricks.

How would the audio quality of the A6 compare to the Scarlet line? I'd wind up looping my podcasts back into the computer, likely via USB?

not having used the scarlet i cant say, ive heard good things about them, although im not sure how they stack up for time code compatability.

The a6 is a pretty widely used soundcard, its made by native instruments and engineered specifically for use with traktor. as far as i know its kind of the industry standard for use in the type of set up you have.

i know some folks here have the scarlet , maybe one can chime in on it before i put my foot in my mouth :P


in the end 300 isnt a huge investment (per se), youd probably enjoy using traktor, and it would definitely fill the roll of your original query :)

Thanks for this. I've been reading about the A6 package here.

What would I be gaining from that soundcard versus, say, just buying a Scarlett 2i4 (second hand, ~$140) and a full copy of Traktor Pro ($100)? EG, is there anything specific the A6 soundcard does to enable a HID CDJ-900 setup? (something the Scarlett wouldn't)?

I think the setup would be the following. If so, I feel like any 2-channel card would do:

Laptop > USB to one CDJ > Ethernet Link(?) to the other CDJ > RCA from CDJ to Xone-92 > Audio out from Xone-92 to Soundcard > USB carrying audio to Laptop to record.
