Best controller (or set of controllers) for Ableton.

Posted on the general discussion forum but thought I would post here as well since there may be some people that frequent this section more.

I am at the stage where I want to start producing music. I already have a pair of studio monitors (KRK RPG2 Rokit G6's....which i got for a KILLER price!) and I am almost done getting the hang of the basics of Ableton.

Now I am looking to invest on a good overall controller (or set of controllers) for it.

After asking around and doing some research I narrowed it down to 2 possibilities:

-MPK25 (slightly used one for $150) and APC40

or

-M-Audio Oxygen 49 with the APC40

I am planning on using both either the Midi keyboard with the APC 40 for production (the apc mainly for activating stuff when recording....may even use it as a live tool later down the road).

What I am looking for in the end is good build quality, durability, and excellent control of ableton.

If anyone else has any other suggestions feel free to say.

MPK25 and APC40
cheaper and better

i think you have enough faders on the APC40
and the MPK25 own 12 knobs and you never have enough knob (+ 9 drums pad)
maybe you can find something like the MPK25 but with more octave. it would be perfect.

If you want to spend a little more... the Ohm64 by livid instruments is the best all in one controller you can find. Completely open source and MIDI flexible, and certainly the mos durable built of high quality aluminum.

I personally don't have one, and i've been working with an axiom 49 pro and apc40 for production, and use the APC40 as my dj controller, but if I could get my $300 back from my APC i would have bought the ohm64 for 600 instead.

Still, the APC40 is a great all around choice.

also, i found an MPK 49 for $150 on craigslist as well. I am asking both selllers (the one for the 25 and 49) of they could possibly ashoot me a video to make sure everything is working.

Anything in particular I sohuld ask? The main thing mentioned to me was to ask them to show the knobs going smoothly from 1-127 on ableton (not jittery).

Anything with 8 pads, 8 knobs, mod/pitch wheels, and banks to quickly change the mappings should be sufficient if you aren't playing live. You can always record your automation and then change the mappings to record again. The only other luxury that really makes a difference is more octaves on your keyboard. The MPK would be just fine.

Apparently there is a back order on the APC40 almost everywhere. I have had one on B/O from Long and McQuade (Canada) for 6 months and finaly just said screw it.

In that time IU picked up a NI Maschine and figured out it does just as well a job as you would like for live performance with ableton.

i have order my APC40 mounts ago and they called me yesterday because they have it. i dunno if you have heard about the Apc80 but it seems its coming soon its why the price get lower for the Apc40. I think the apc40 the best choice cause its priceless and also better for live performance ( w/ ableton) and for producing APC 40 is the best choice

i understand it is good for performance and production

but what benefits does it have over and MPK49?

its own many knobs and drum pad give a special feeling when recording drums (for me)
the most important like TWD and I said upward is the octaves, its easier to have 4 oct keyboard for creating melodies
