First off let me applaud you for not just torrenting everything out there. Logic Express would be a good start. I'm not sure how it compares to light versions of Abelton though. You could also do some stuff in Garage Band.

Haha yeah, im not really a thief. I have been using garageband for the last year or so. And i have played on reason a fair bit. Reason however doesnt really allow remixing that easily. Im thinking abelton now, i found i have a hundred dollars off voucher, so its most likely my best bet.

Ableton has a very easy and intuitive work flow, whereas Logic (Express) is pretty complicated imo. Especially when it comes to samples and remixes Ableton is def the better tool.

Ableton seems to be a really good tool for those moving from DJing into production, since it's not a total change of workflow.

And for the DJ/producer, I would suggest Seraktelton.

Honestly I had to go through the same process when I started out, and I realized after much research and chatter with a few other people that they all have their pros and cons. In the end it's whatever you feel most comfortable with. I personally chose Ableton simply because DJTT is my second house and a lot of people seem to discuss more about Ableton on here, therefor for me it seemed as if it was a no brainer.

So I chose Ableton, and have not regretted it, however I have not used it much as I focus mainly on DJing and when I want to produce something I mostly drum out my stuff on Maschine. And I got a cheaper copy off of Craigslist.

However, our circumstances could be extremely different, but I do believe both Ableton and Logic have cheaper versions that you can acquire to see whether or not you wanna take the few hundred dollar plunge into the program.

I was gonna suggest possibly looking at FL Studio, because that's pretty much what I tell everyone who asks this question. But since youre running OSX, I guess Ableton might be the way to go!
