Another which to get thread...

This will be another which should I get thread.I will try to provide as much information as possible so please help me out with any .02c. Thanks!

I am going to start dj'g. I will running a digital set up (computer). My gigs will be small time stuff like private parties and small house/bar stuff. If I grow to more higher places I figure I can reinvest in some areas so I am mainly focused on the current gigs. I am looking to mostly do hip-hop/pop/ top 40 mixing (trying to bring a night club type set to non club location). I don't plan to do some crazy scratching or battle but I would like to maybe do some and practice and have something quality to do so. I want to also add my own flair and do some live band/sound stuff into the mixing. So that also means that I will plan on being completely mobile for a while. However I am OK with something large like a NS7 if the product is worth it. I wont be doing 5 gigs a week so mobile but not book bag sized is what I am.

I don't really have a preference on software and can learn quick. I might want to add a mike for announcements so input or aux inputs would be nice but not a huge deal. Other than that I would like as many options as possible that would allow me to dj properly.

My budget is at most around 1k for now. That needs to include software, controller, and mixer. I am not really interested in wasting money on a cheapy and then spend more money later. I rather front now and learn on what I will use. I am for spending as little as possible to save for other things but I dont want to be or LOOK ill equipped on my gigs.

I am looking at the following...

denon mc6000
Pioneer DDJ-T1 (s1 is to much)
S4 (better than mc6?)
ns6
denon sc2000 x2 (need mixer with sc or sc and mixer)
ns7 (used)
v7 x1 with like $400 mixer or v7 x 2 with cheep mixer ( I like the v7 and ns7 because of the motorized tables. I am not sure that since im not a TTist I should care but I feel like it's maybe a more high end set up and frankly also looks really cool? Is that worth it or am I caring about nothing? and also.. I guess even though 1 v7 does 2 decks if I got 2 I still can't run 4 decks? So should I just get 1 v7 if that was better?

So my final question is decks... seems like noone talks about 2 decks vs 4? Is it really better or not really important?

So which would you choose for me? or something else? The V7 questions are big for me so if anyone can help.

and with pioneer your paying for the name.
These are ur options. I would say get any thats 4 deck because u can progress from 2 to 4

Hi,
For starting i would recommand to keep it as simple as possible and focus on 2 decks for a while, you'll switch to 3 or 4 naturaly when you feel ready for it!

Now... the gear !
If you really want do use the 1k, go for the s4. I didn't had the chance to test it yet but you'll have a good mapping labelled as it should and the most important: TP2 is included.
Just my opinion but i prefer it's layout compared to the denon mc6000 or the Pioneer DDJ-T1.
Personaly, i don't care about motorized TTs but that's realy just a matter of djing style...
For example, i use my jogs for beatgridding and prepping my cues but when i play i almost only use them for fx tricks and a bit of beatmashing...

it always interests me when i see what people are able to start with these days....kind of jealous, actually.

out of the options you have, i would go w the S4 since its a great all in one solution and still leaves you some cash left over.

I'd go for the S4, and I'll give the reasons I normally give (I should have along version of this saved in a text file somewhere).

It's a great controller. It comes with great software. It has a built in soundcard. You can plug turntables in later if you wish. It has everything you need not just to get started but to go as far as you like.

I would say get any thats 4 deck because u can progress from 2 to 4

Every manufacturer and his gran has released at least one 4 deck controller over the past year or so, but how many people actually use the 3rd or 4th deck? The most I have EVER used in a mix is 3, and I can definitely manage with 2 especially now we have sample decks. The poll I started a couple of weeks ago about what people use on their VCI-100 SEs shows that only about 35% of people claim to use decks C or D in Traktor as track decks and while admittedly the VCI doesn't have a dedicated 4 fader channel mixer section, I think this is somewhat telling.

What I'm saying is, don't set 3 or 4 deck mixing as an ambition yet, until you really think that firstly you can handle all the EQs and levels, and also that you can actually add something to your mix playing more than 2 decks at once.

But still get an S4.

about the 2 vs 4 decks... i was more or less asking about if the ability is necessary or if since im buying gear now, if it would be dumb to NOT get a 4 deck set up. I personally dont see myself probably using more than 3 and that will for sure be after I get used to 2.


seems like the s4 is the favorite on here and a lot of the forum itself, my concern is two things, build quality and working with my computer. I have a dell with windows 7 64bit. I guess there have been a lot of issues with the s4 working with windows? Also, a lot of reports of things breaking or falling apart on the hardware itself? I again have no problem dropping the 900 but if it get it and it doesnt work well or falls apart quickly, I will lose my mind.

which is why I looked to the denon which seems solid as a rock, however the software that comes is crap so another 200 to get tpro 2. but i dont want to be worried about bumping the jogs on the denon.

is there a reason why any V7 set up on here doesnt seem popular. they are 350 online right now so i could get 2 for only 700 and buy a mixer.. but then im only running two decks no matter what?

By the way... I live in the US so most if not everything should be easy for me to get.

Are you a scratch DJ? If so, I hear the V7s are pretty good for that. My friend is a hip hop DJ and he just switched to the NS7...loves it.

You can run a 2-deck setup with the occasional 3rd deck (or 4th). You have software and sound built-in... I think whatever bugs with Win7 have been worked out by now.

Thanks for the feedback! Again, I mainly just want to be a mainstream top 40 type mix dj. So I don't see a lot of scratching currently in my future but would like if possible to have something that if I ever did want to scratch more... would still be capable to some extent. But since I am not an old school vinyl dj, Im not sure that I really need to have a vinyl feel. Thanks for the envy. I am really only getting this stuff by selling a few things and tax money. Unfortunately I dont have some ridiculous income that would allow my to cheep updating my gear. probably the big reason why I am son concerned and asking questions.
