How do you make this skipping effect ?

Hey guys,

I was listening to the Fedde Le Grand Remix of Paradise (sick song btw), and I'm trying to understand how did he do this kind of skipping effect that is happening on the main synth. It starts from 0:57 and goes through out the whole song. Did he use an effect on his main synth or is it just the way he programmed in Midi? Any help would be greatly appreciated !

sounds like a gated pattern, that is turned on and off.
