About the 1200 MK2..?

Hi guys, been on this forum for about a month now. Also a beginner with the whole vinyl..been trying to get my timecode set up..just haven't played too much with it because I want you guys to further educate me just a bit. So here goes:

1) Did I get a good deal on this? He charged me 200 for a cosmetically worn but fully function 1200 MK2.

2) The time code. I know this sounds like a nooby question but I bought the MK2 vinyl (blue one) and have the timecode set up. As far as scratching goes, should the record be spinning with the actual turn table? Should it be loosely slipping or gripping a little bit?

3) Can anyone recommend a decent cartridge/needle for scratching for the 1200 MK2? I don't want to go out of a crazy price range because I'm still learning.

1. Yes, $200 is a fine price for a 1200MK2 in that condition. Make sure it's got good RCA cables, pitch works and zeros out, pop up light works, tonearm and anti skate properly function, etc.

2. I don't fully understand your second question, but you should have the platter/slipmat/record all spinning as one with the needle on the record. Once you start scratching don't put too much weight on the record with your hand causing the platter to stop. The platter should still be spinning with your hand holding the record still. Hope this made sense.

3. For Cartridge, I'd recommend (as well as many others) the Shure M44-7 for scratching. It is a proven Cart and simply one of the best in DJing. They're roughly $70 a piece already mounted of headshells (which I assume you need). You can go cheaper on needles because you're using a timecoded setup (maybe a Stanton 500v3 or likewise), but you're probably going to want to just get the M44-7s straight out and if you don't have the cash, save up.

1) Well, I hope I got a decent deal on it. It's all functional.

2) Okay, understood completely. That's what I'm doing. The platter is still moving, don't worry. Just wanted to make sure I was doing it right. You explained it well.

3) Awesome, I will check those out. I can afford 70 dollars, I only have one as of right now anyway.

Looks decent enough for the money, the cart thats with it is a Stanton 500 which are fine multi purpose cart/stylus and were the norm at most scratch competitions for many many years.

Looks like you you could do with a new power switch cover and tonearm clip, they shouldn't cost too much.

Also check for wobble on the tonearm, grab it a wiggle it left/right/back/forward. Set the Antiskate to "0" and the balance so that it floats, make sure it isn't getting stuck in the one position all the time when its floating or pulling to either side. Sometimes the top bearings get flattened when they are stuck in a flight case so may need tightening/loosening or replacement.

The weight is backwards too.
