Default Beginning DJ - Need help

Hi, I'm a high schooler who wants to get into DJing, but I have a small budget and the most I can afford to get is between the Hercules RMX and the Numark Omni Control midi controllers.

For the past month I've been researching on both units, and I have mixed reviews and opinions on both, such as one lacks sampling, one has Traktor, the other has virtual DJ, one review said the Omni has a terrible sound card, etc.

I'm going to get it this Thursday, but I'm having a difficult time making a decision, because I'm a bit stressed about ensuring that I get a set that can last, can help me learn the ropes, and preform satisfactory in gigs.

Sorry if I'm sounding too demanding, but I would greatly appreciate your help and opinions. I'm not sure which of the two to purchase, unless there's another unit close to the same price that is better.

    Thanks again.

From everything I've heard and read, the RMX is a great controller for it's price point. I haven't heard of too many people whom were unhappy with it, though as a matter of money and such works out, people do grow out of it.

    Best of luck to you!

Also, if you are looking at the RMX also take a look at the Hercules Steel and think about getting an external sound card (like the NI Audio 2 DJ). That way if you want to upgrade in the future, you wouldn't have to buy a soundcard. I believe it should be just about in the same price range.

Ok. And just curious, is there a simple way to getting the RMX to work with Traktor, without rewiring its internal components?

Yes. Any midi controller will work with Traktor. That's what they mean by ".tsi" files.

To elaborate a little on that you would find a .tsi file for the RMX (I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction), load that file into Traktor and voila, your RMX works with Traktor. At least that's the way it should work in theory. There may be a few bugs and things that work differently form other controllers depending on which .tsi file you use.

Default I got the RMX; however, I have problems

Ok so I just got the RMX today + a pair of Xone XD-53 headphones. I got everything installed (unsure if it was correctly), I started up Virtual DJ, I think I got the Windows 7 drivers correctly installed (again, not sure), but really fuzzy things have been happening. The left sync light flashes, the left cue select button stays lit, the cross fading isn't working, and so forth. I am a beginner and new to all of this, but I honestly have no idea what's wrong.

This looks to be the latest drivers.

How to manually update your firmware.

    A mapper pack.

    Traktor .tsi files

You can download a free demo of Traktor pro here. It will only work for 30 minutes each time you run it and it won't record, but other than that it's fully functional.

I don't have an RMX so I'm not sure any of that will help you, but it should at least keep you busy for the better part of a day

I reinstalled the drivers (that you linked) this morning before going to school, but it still seems to be unresponsive for almost half of the unit. The line faders don't decrease the volume 100%, the Master volume fader does nothing, and a couple buttons (not all of the ones with LEDs) flash for some reason.

But just wondering, if I have headphones in does that mean I can only cue songs? And that I would need speakers?

Sorry for all the questions btw, but super thanks for the help so far.

EDIT: I just realized that this should be in the General Discussion (correct?) forum after reading the forum rules, so if a Mod could please move this thread, thanks

What sound card are you using (it sounds like it might be the one in your computer)? If it is your computer's native sound card, you will either have to live with master out OR cueing if you want stereo. But if you could live with mono, you could split the L and R for master/cueing (done through your output settings in your DJ program).

In the end you will need a proper audio interface (sound card). Which one depends on what you want to do with it (just mix, DVS, audio in and out, etc.).

And don't be sorry for questions. If you have read the FAQ and used search, but still have a question (and I think your problems warrant questions), don't be shy.
