Well, for me, back in the day like 20-22 years ago, we where doing most of the sweet16s in my old neighborhood, I had my dad's 3rd hand Hitachi turntable, my cousin had a 2nd hand JVC of some-sort, I don't remember having a mixer, however we had 2 hi-fi amps a Nikko and a tubed Pioneer plugged together, there was set of speakers on each, and we would just lower the volume of one turntable and bring up the next one, it was fun, crude but fun. Many years later, like 2 years ago, my job was lost due to the automotive bull shit that was going on, so to pass my time until my next job, I started looking for demos on line, I started with Virtual DJ, it was a 30day free trial, after the 30th day I get a pop up and it said, time to pay...the next day as I was driving around looking for a job I landed at my local music store and they had a old but still in the box Traktor 3 at like 1/3 the price, so I picked it up, I did not even have any midi controlers, just a pc, a mouse and some headphones. I got home that day and I have been using Traktor ever since, I have tried mixmister, torq, sorato scratch & live and still I return to my now updated TraktorPro, then finally I received a gift from a close friend that supported my interest in music, so a OmniControl was added, and still Traktor was used, to this day I still use Traktor there's a lot of support for that here, and DJTT has help me in many ways. I think I will stay with NI maybe save some coin and pick up a S4...
I may have gone a bit off with my story but I felt like sharing.

See i dont see a problem with planning things out in advance. I can do an end zone mix no problem on the fly, i think THAT is boring and just dont see the need to. I definitely get what people are saying with Live how it becomes "too structured" and you can end up sitting staring at your screen for a while before you actually have to do anything. I can see how that can be boring but for the sake of enjoying the music its not a bad thing. I dont feel the need to be a controllerist and be beat mashing non stop. (Good) producers make tracks generally (i assume) to be enjoyed all the way through and i like to play the majority of a tracks length.

This is genre dependent of course, prog or tech house is more suited to this, I'm slowly building my electro library and i find mixing that stuff is a lot more choppy and sectional to keep the energy levels up as opposed to the other 2 genres where you want more of a groove. And yeah thats def more fun and engaging to do, but i also like the longer groovier vibes of prog and tech house.

But if you check out the mix i did for the DJTT prog mix #2 for example: the first track i "echo froze" the first track out and started the second track in the first main section, the second track i did what i described before i.e. starting the 3rd track 64 bars before the 2nd song ended and brought up the volume right after the peak ended on the 2nd track right where a new vocal comes in on the 3rd track, and the 4th track was "slammed" into while cutting off the 3rd track as soon as the main started.

There is no way i could just show up somewhere and have done all those transitions exactly where i did them on the fly. I mean you would seriously have to know your songs inside and out to pull that off and even with a small library of like 200 songs i dont know them that well. I can only imagine those of you with 1000's of songs would have a seriously hard time doing that.

This is where pre-planning is a benefit, because i can sort all those musical details out in advance and create (what i think) is a more interesting mix than just straight blending songs from a to b all night. No?

I dunno i think its a personality thing, but some people would say im less of a DJ for doing that. And I would reply thats fine...but did you like what you heard? Thats all i care about, did you enjoy it. You may not think much of me as a technical DJ then, i dont really care, im more concerned with the quality of the songs and the music technicality/complexity of what im doing than "you can't improvise".

I started out using VDJ, which was good to learn on. But then purchased my Omni and started using Traktor LE. I liked it, but i missed not having loops, or being able to record. Which prompted me to upgrade to Traktor Pro. Great program, works well, does as it says on the box and i love it.

It also looks good too, compared to that of VDJ or SSL. I don't think there will ever been colored wave forms in Traktor, due to the color scheme of the rest of the program. It would look completely out of place. Saying that, I'm not fully sure of why people would want it in the first place? Isn't it obvious where the highs and lows are from the normal waveform view?

Started mucking around with FL studio a few years ago (back when it was still called fruity loops) and deckadance at the same time. Father christmas gave me a big dvd full of vsts and traktor studio was among the goodies. Didn't take it too seriously tho till traktor 3 came out. Preferred it over decadance so stuck with it. The rest is resigned to myth and legend ..

started noodling around with traktor2 just for the odd shit n giggle, a way for me to get a hold on djing without having to visit my friends who had the technics+mixer setup...

once traktor 3 came out i knew there was something to this digital djing thing. started taking my djing way more seriously and fell in love with the craft. i'm still using traktor 3.2, there are just some things about it's interface and functionality i prefer over traktorpro and the other traktor 3 versions.
