Why are there new vci clones each day?
Why are there 9999 strat copies on the market now. The electric guitar hasn't really changed in 50 yrs yet people are still driven to make new ones.

My vci is fine thank you very much. (I did buy an apc40 this year but that's cos it's so perfect for Ableton)

I think what you get with the S4 is brilliant for the money though... Fully integrated program, controller, sound card, timecode support... If you factor all this in, and add up what you'd have to buy seperately, i think you'll be saving a hell of alot of money. I'm looking forward to getting this and purchasing a CD or TT deck later to mess around on! It's got such good prospects!

I use control vinyl so I'm not concerned about jog wheels and such.. but I use two LPD8's for cues and FX... These get taken around with me to lots of gigs.. to booths where most controllers just wouldn't fit... I tape these down to whatever surface is available.. sometimes to walls and such when the booth is really tight.. so build quality is really important.

Bento summed up my feelings pretty well.

Lately the controllers that have meant the most to me are the basic devices which supplement my DVD setup in a club environment.

My midi fighter/ dicers/sl3 give me all the basic cue point, mixing, and transport controls I need to build a set, anything extra I use is just for kicks.

The only thing I find my self wishing i had now is a few knobs and buttons which fit into a club work flow with the same ease as the dicers.

I've been thinking about building some slim controllers (1" thick) which would slot between the mixed and whatever deck is being used. Each would have 4 very solid encoders and 4 tactile buttons in a vertical arangement.

I'd code them to work in the same daisy chain arrangement as we used in the dicer.

What do you all think about that concept?

Like it. I'd like it even more with 8 knobs and 8 buttons per unit, but then we're kinda just getting into X1 territory, huh?

Yeah, I get your point. I think where I'm coming from might have a lot to do with appearances and form factor. (I don't see the S4 as a "clone"). I never made the association of the VCI-100 being a "classic" layout though, since from the moment I got into digital djing I think I've been most attracted to "next level" controllers - you know, the gear that doesn't conform to the old 2 decks and a mixer paradigm. I just don't approach digital djing that way. I kind of felt like from the start, we were in a period of transition and experimentation, so I didn't expect the VCI look-alikes to last so long and explode like they have. I've been a little let down lately with the market, when what I really want to see is more shit like this:http://www.youtube.com/reactable#p/u/9/kVTjrwqGnvQ
