But once I heard about Calc for Engineers I kinda made a sad face. I want to be a DJ to pay the bills but my dad isn't a major disco producer, ala Thomas Bangalter, so I know my chances of even owning a house on a DJ's wage would be nill. I would like to do what most of my friends have done, and that is drop out, get a GED and follow my dreams. But I just can't seem to do it. Living with a single mom my entire life I has given me persistence but would an education later in life not be the same as me getting one now that I'm about to attend the Uni?

Go to school and get a degree. Get a job after graduation. DJ on the side (starting now) to test out the waters. If you feel you can make the jump to just DJing from DJing and your job, do it. And hey, you could get a degree somewhere in the technical side of music.

Go to school. If your dream is to make music, you can get into a music career MANY ways. If you don't go to school, your options diminish greatly. Not only that, but if you find out that your dream isn't really for you, you'll have a degree that will help keep you on your feet.

School first, then get a job.
Keep your Djing thing on the side, only ever make the jump to DJing if your totally sure that it can support you fully.
Like Neomonic said theres alot of jobs in the music biz that don't just include performing - some of these jobs can pay quite well too.

I'm a Network Security Specialist....
I may not be wearing a big mouse head/mask, or have people come to my gigs to watch my LED cube, but...
I released a few tracks on a prominent Detroit label this year...
Held a club residence for 10 years...
Played all the major clubs I used to visit (thinking.. "one day I'll play here")
Been invited to play in countries I would never have otherwise had the chance to visit...
Truth be told, I love playing/performing more than I love getting paid...
BUT.. my NetSec job affords me a nice place to come home to; complete with a nice deck, grill and big backyard.
(and I have the best music at my neighborhood parties, and neighbors don't know I play!! hahaha)
This community is giving you straight up good advice... go to school friend... you'll figure out the balance.
