That's not even that interesting, what do you think ambassadors in other countries do? One of their primary tasks outside of acting as a point of contact for a country within another country is to gather information. Also, the cables go back much further than that and the USA has been playing the game this way way before before Hillary was made Secretary of State.

I also believe that the other countries play the game in more or less the same way, believing anything else is altruistic and bordering on naive stupidity.

no, the interesting part was that they were told to collect biometric data. not just what they're up to, what they say, but very very specific information on their biology.

Gerard Batten, a UKIP MEP, said the Assange case highlighted the dangers of the European arrest warrant, because the judge has no power to listen to the evidence to judge if there is a prime facie case.

He said: "I don't know of the quality of the evidence in Mr Assange's case but it does seem that he is involved in political turmoil and intrigue and there are a lot of people keen to shut him up and there is nothing a court in the UK can do to look at the evidence before they extradite him."

Wikileaks has brought to the public information ranging from specific incidents of civilian casualties in Iraq, to the politics around why Boeing lost a Belgian contract for fighter jets. Their releases have been wide ranging, and provide a public service no other entity is able or willing to provide. Traditionally, this has been the role of news organizations, but there really is no such thing anymore since the idea (mandate) of news as a public service is no longer relevant. News is now a for profit source of entertainment - especially in the US - and it's no longer possible for modern news organizations to act in this role. What's more, Wikileaks has cooperated with major news organizations all over the world BEFORE releasing information, so to imply that they're just releasing information without considering it's impact is ignoring the facts. Assange could have been MORE salacious and controversial and generated a LOT more publicity if he had released ALL of the information available to him with no redaction, edits, or omissions (such as specific names). But we know for a fact that these kinds of considerations had been made in the past.
