This is why they are now trying to get isp's to cut people off or at least threaten to.
    I'd be interested!

Thanks for your post, it makes a lot of sense.

Check out theRegister and look up stuff to do with ACS Law - the guy in charge had business model invovling harvesting IP addresses from torrent sites, then demanding settlements from the owner of the IP address in order to not take them to court, where they may have to pay a hell of a lot more.

When some defendants asked for their day in court, his arguments were tossed byt he judge, and looks like the bloke running it might actually have to pay for wasting the courts time

right im looking for it now used it in a paper. Its mainly to do with there evidence gathering they where using IP address's then sending out a letter, so if some one had downloaded a single song from a site they would start a court process and say they would settle for somthing like 10 grand and people did, it worked for a while.

Then some one turned round and said I will see you in court, at this point they tried to drop the case, the arguement was is that IP address are very easily faked if you know wat you are doing there are also ways to steal internet and make it look like another persons connection.

In the UK i have never heard of or seen a high tech crime unit seizing equipment over pirated material appart from in the cases of the people running the sites. They have more important things to do than get involved in civil matters. The soliciters liquidised due to bank details that got leaked and they where going to get heavily fined.

Downloading music online is in a bit of a grey area of the law and isnt really a criminal matter. Selling pirated material ie DVD's down the pub is a criminal matter. This means that it is not really worthy of a high tech crime units time.

No soliciters have come forward to represent the music industry after this as they pretty much left the last lawfirm in the shit. This is why they are now trying to get the ISP's to play ball.

two problems tho people spoofing mac and ip address's and loosing customers. If a ISP is known for cutting people off ppl will go with another isp. Also the people stealing music and films are normally on higher priced packages so are more valued customers.

Virgin media have agreed to send out letters threatening to cut people off but have said they will not cut people off.

Also I think it should be noted that judging from the variety of responses on here the laws in your country/area could be different than the next so best to always do some research if plan on playing out anywhere.

As far as licensing goes, all venues have to pay ASCAP and BMI for licensing on music. It's a yearly fee dependent on occupancy and it covers them for any music that's played. Even if it's a coffeehouse that only has singer-songwriters playing acoustic guitar, you still have to have the licenses in the event that someone strums out a few bars of John Mayer.
    1000x THIS.

I highly doubt anyone is going to go through all of the effort to make every DJ playing prove that their music collection is 100% legit. I could care less how you procure your music collection. Some people like to do it legally, others do not. Legally purchased music is much easier to sort because it's generally tagged properly, that's for sure.

I get my music off of eMusic, its cheap and most of the popular stuff is on there. Other wise I'll rip off of CD's or cave and buy from iTunes.

If its some song that I just need in a hurry to do a request I'll rip off of YouTube and delete it later.

Seriously, if you can't afford the $12.95 a month for 8thwonderpromos.com...maybe DJin isn't for you =)

If you desperately need a track: beatport, amazon, or itunes.
