So if you want to be EXTRA helpful, do you know where I can find info pertaining to levels and effects, that go beyond just a description of the effect?
Also as for dynamics, I am completely aware of how to use them in a set but having levels jump 35% higher relative to the rest of your set, causing peaking is sort of a shitty way to be dynamic.

this might sound stupid, but if something doesn't sound good, why not just do something else? I mean, there are a ton of different options for every effect and different versions of some.

There is no easy way with this, really. It's just practice and learning how different FX intereact with different sounds.

If Echo is getting too loud then pull down the volume. If the trail on the Delay is too soft then boost the resonance, or something. If peak filter is causing your audio to clip then play with the effect until it doesn't. *shrug*

As far as how to tell what FX do what to what frequencies, just a google search for DJ style Echo or something. Read tweakheadz.com, get the Dance Music Manual or How to DJ Right... or just experiment. I guarantee that no amount of reading will make up for just twiddling knobs until you find the groove.

If I want smoother fx transitions I change the FX in Traktor to sends and rout them out to 2 channels on my mixer. It's much easier for me to lower the clean channel when bringing in 100% FX on a second channel with the input faders but have to say the previous solution is intriguing and I might try the midi option although I don't think there's any set amount of gain reduction for all FX. It more of a case by case basis.

Hands on practice is the best way to learn imo. get to know your effects, get to know what works, what doesn't, how it workks and what it works with.
