One problem with Beatport when it comes to top 10 is that it is sometimes to small and easily manipulated...

For example a couple of weeks ago Toolroom Miami 2011 was released and at least 5 out of 10 top tunes (house) was from that compilation . I don't have any opinion about the tunes, itīs more about how the selection to top 10 is done. If people starts to add one good track on an album they listen to more tracks and add the whole album... then it floods the list. We tend to follow what other people do... (some of you take a pride in doing the opposite and that's great, but you still use the top 10 lists to know what to avoid )

In one way we DJ like fresh top 10 lists, but we want the quality too.
Maybe they should have more top 10 lists for today, week and month?

I usually end up reveiwing my cart like 10-15 times exchanging tracks from my hold and back. I always go there each day and mess with my cart. I end up with some trance tracks that are up on their chart list but I dont usually use that chart for finding great tunes.

    This.

Also, am I the only person who doesn't understand why a track being unpopular is a virtue? I mean I'm all for promoting new music etc, and I can certainly see why many of us (me included) hate to play the newest pop sensation that's all over MTV.

But top 40 aside, which anyway is something beatport doesn't really deal in, it surely has to say SOMETHING about a track if lots of people are buying it. I mean, it's got to be at least worth a listen. And I doubt anyone's going to be standing in front of you at a gig, holding up a whiteboard stating the current position of the track you're playing in the beatport top 10 and judging you for being a scene kid.

To each their own, if its a banger, get it if its too commercially wack and you dont seem to want to incorporate in your sets ... ditch it. easy

I don't think I've ever even listened to one of the top 10 lists on Beatport.

Just stick to the new releases. Trust your ears.

But what if the top 10 releases are absolute bangers that you and everyone will love? I just don't understand why someone else saying it's good makes it bad. Maybe that's just me.

Mental. What if people have heard it before. You'll get stoned.

it's not a black & white argument like that. even if it was, the note of contention isn't so much that popular music is bad so much as a dj who only plays charted or popular music is bad.

we only have a few ways of creating our own unique voice and vision with other people's music, one of those ways is with our digging and track selection. so a dj who only plays music that's on top10 charts or blogs is diluting any originality they might have when their music selection is greatly determined by other djs taste in music.

I follow artists in beatport and soundcloud which play the type of music i like, Progressive but with big drops etc..

alot of the time a track you get will be in the top 10 at some point. I love the feeling of getting a track and playing it before everyone else is playing it in your area..

I find this is a good way to hear the tracks i want at least 2 weeks eariler before it starts making its way up the top "10" list
