You guys are all right in my opinion. I think it just depends on the gig you are at as to what the audience are expecting. I know of booths that are out the way and no one can see the DJ. Other booths right smack bang above the dance floor, those 2 examples require 2 difference kind of performance. In the town I DJ in there are lots of different kind of clubs, hip hop, top 40, electro, dubstep. Each one will require the DJ to mix and perform differently. One of the places that really goes off the DJ uses Virtual DJ with a mouse and keyboard! Go figure

And I didn't say anything about "standard nightclubs" either (what ever you consider to be a standard night that is). I said me personally I like to stand out with different abilities. Ok forget turntablism but if blending from one track to another is your thing then maybe you should be on a different forum cos as the man who started this website demonstrates, there's more to it then that. And again, you mean to tell me everyone in the audience in this video is a DJ too? (and before you say he's using traktor and I was talking about not wanting to rely on it... he's not me).

mate do you think ean golden does that for 1h+ in a dj set? nah....for dj's that actually play in clubs you have to actually play some music or people will walk out. As cool as a turntablism/controllerism routines sound, it still sounds crap compared to an actual song and in the majority of djing situations all people wanna do is dance, not see you masturbate with turntables for the whole night.

It is a catch 22 sometimes, some people want to see or hear the dj doing something different on a laptop otherwise it is sometimes considered cheating by those who think all we are doing is syncing, they don't hear the intricacies such as re editing on the fly they just think the track was made like that, although isn't that the point of a good mix? that it is seamless and sounds like it was meant to be like that

this is an interesting discussion. friday night I played my first ever gig with one turntable and three controllers (not counting the evo5), taking full advantage of sync - because after 10+ years of DJing I don't need to prove to anyone I can beatmatch and keep 3 decks in check manually. I found it gave me more time to do seriously crazy shit with my new mapping, and the crowd loved it. can't say I got bored for a second, actually pushing the envelope a bit was exciting.

exactly, it sometimes seems like the only skill people see in djing is the beatmatching, not the reading the crowd, phrasing and other bits and pieces that we do, maybe we should go back to banging rocks together to make music, they may be happy then
