I don't use them, I use decks 3 and 4 instead. I suppose I just havn't found a better use for them in my sets as awesome as they are. I think once you've mastered how ot use them properly they can be powerful mixing tools for your sets.

At the moment I'm having a lot of fun with 4 decks running loops on 3 and 4.

I haven't used them out yet but definitely plan on using the sample decks in a downtempo ambient set as I have tons of vocal samples and quotes that lend themselves perfectly to it. Plan is to mix tracks on decks A&B, deck C is for ambiances such as forrest, jungle, swamp, rain, ocean and such with the sample decks playing singular stabs and trippy vocal stuff.

I've just started downloading film quotes, lock stock,
Snatch, human traffic, gona try and think of more common one liners and start dropping them in on the breakdown or long intros

So you can cut loops in a sample deck? If each slot had a dedicated loop cut knob I would be in.

Also, I've wondered what is the point of the default mapping of one knob on the S4 controlling all 4 sample slot filters exactly the same amount? And same thing for volume? Why not just use the volume fader and channel filter? Is there some way to control an individual slots filter/volume with the S4?

While we're on this subject, does ANYONE use the loop recorder? I see potential with the sample decks, I haven't seen anything useful done with the loop recorder, it just seems like a gimmick and waste of a channel.

If anything it takes up screen real estate and I wish I could disable it in Traktor so I could fit all 4 FX units in large format at the top of the screen on a 15" Macbook.

I do a lot of looping but mainly do that in the regular decks.
However: I've found great use for the sample decks as a way to better tie a whole set together; not only with one-shots and drops and whatnot, but for example using a tablas percussion loop as a main theme to mix in here and there, to tie the whole thing together. Must be used with caution of course, it's easy to make it too much.

On the S4 when focused on the sample deck, you can select 1-4 slots and change the filter or volume on the one or ones selected only instead of all 4 at once.
Check the S4 forum for a thread on uses of the loop recorder.

Soon As I hear a nice loop I would like to use again throughout my transitions...I loop and send to sample deck.

I like to layer 2 tracks over each other and play about.

So if i cut a sample from track 1.....I can still use that bit of energy when I am at track 4 or 5.

Just helps me tie the set together and make it mine.

    Thats how I use em.

I sometimes use them to only keep a loop going... but I can easily do the same in a 4deck layout as well.

But usually I find them to be clutter in most cases.
