Not an amazing idea. Thunderbolt was introduced in early 2011, which doesn't matter now, but considering that Apples tend to last at least through their warranty period (including Apple Care, which you should get) it might impact things down the line.
First, it's faster…better hard drives will be coming out soon if they're not out already.
Second, there's a good chance that high-end audio interfaces will run off Thunderbolt soon.
If you don't care about that, then it might work well. But Apple's refurbished program comes with a crappier warranty, IIRC, and doesn't save you that much.
And Apple's warranty is worth keeping if there's an even halfway decent apple store or repair center near you. Sometimes they screw up, but I've had nothing but good experiences in the end. Even the bad experiences are good…the last time I wasn't happy with the service I got in an Apple Store, Apple gave me a new laptop one email and one phone call later.
