CDJ users got lots of heat from turntable users when they first come out, now they are widely accepted - the same goes for using midi equipment. Its people like yourself sticking up for the tools of your trade who are going to made midi the accepted new format

As a dj who's gone midi, I feel the heat out there from the traditionalists. It's weird, seeing as how I can do more elaborate things than I ever could have done when I was spinning vinyl, literally producing in the fly, and I still have to defend myself at every gig. But I try and keep in mind that the people that matter are the crowd, not other dj's. If you rock the floor consistently it speaks for itself. As for the look of the gear, I agree with Bento - reliability and true functionality is where it's at. Really good gear tends to look professional, but when it comes to midi controllers it's a transitional time. I use a vci-100, and get nearly everything I want out of it (esp. when firmware 1.4 gets done), and I have been concerned about the look before, but my answer has been to modify it to look good, program my mappings to be rock solid, and otherwise be patient with letting people get used to seeing a midi controller up there! Personally I don't find anything unprofessional looking about a black vci-100, dascratch, monome, vci-300, NI's new gear, etc. Basically if the gear is doing exactly what I want it to do, reliably, I have a lot of trouble swallowing that I would get something else just because elitist fuckheads that I'm not playing for anyway aren't used to my gear. Like Bento said, there was a time when cd djs took a lot of flack. That passed, so will this.
I would never get an NS7 just owing to the size and the difficulty finding the space for it in a permanent installation. Portability is key. As an aside, can the vci-300 be used with an external sound card? If it can, that and another small controller to handle fx would be a nice rig.
