This is probably the draw card for these devices. Not only are they a good bit of kit, but they work intuitively with the software they are designed for. No fucking around, no hassle. Plug it in. Rock out.

Kind of like other industry standards - technics and cdj's. Plug in. Rock out.

If you want to do things differently, sweet.

Whats wrong with people calling themselves artists? Surely someone who uses sound as a form of expression and to have a pre determined effect on an individual could be classed as an 'artist'?
I agree with the rest though, I don't see how the creativity comes from mapping directly. The mapping is done to suit your needs, and the creativity comes from what you then go on to do surely?

    Yeah i figured as much.

I get what your saying, i do but... in the past midi controllers were always lacking the vision of the DJs that used them.

The VCI 100 was tweaked and modded into oblivion by DJTT and all of us that had them cus Vestax made something great that the community made AMAZING but it was clearly not designed by a DJ working with the later versions of Traktor.

Fast forward to today and companies like NI (and Vestax) have real DJs, artists and teams of developers that are all DJ's. So, the products come out much more fit for purpose. The S4 was designed by DJs (Ean Golden for one).
Look at the Vestax VCI400, (i dont like it) but it been clearly made to fit the need of the current Traktor user.

I just think theres less need to tweak the midi functions of controllers cus they do pretty much all you want unless you have a controller that requires specific mapping like an APC or something.

With every device there are couple of levels of usage, for turntables you have: regular listening, DJing and scratching (which is pushing the device to it's limits). And once you learn to operate the turntable, you switch to learning hod to beatmatch and then after that, all you are left with is to max-out your DJing skill and/or learn how to scratch. But that is the limit of the device, to go over that limit, you'd have to use opto-encoders / DVS / bluetooth-enabled carts / phone attached to a plastic disc. That would give you a ability to mix videos (EJK turntable) or Overlay your track cuepoints with projector (can't remmeber the project name).
Same with the controllers and default mapings, there is only so much you could do with default mapping and one you max-out your skill you are still in a group of people who are excellent at using their controller. But there is no innovation after that.
Many photons have died to bring you this information.

Sorry, but that had to be said.....

    EDIT:

tl;dr-version: By all means, do what works for you, but stop making up f***ing rules for other people!
Everything this guy said for the win! Don't hate on "NI Fanboys" because some prefer the stock and less buggy .tsi mapping. Especially when Ean Golding himself worked with NI to create the layout/mapping.

I myself tinker with different *.tsi mappings, really like the jog-wheel effects in midi-mode, however there are glaring issues with using different mappings. You end up losing some of the original functionality like sample size leds no longer displaying, or losing the ability to jump forward/backward by a bar in the track, ect..

Not everyone likes to spend hours upon hours customizing their controller, most prefer to plug and play, and whats wrong with that?

Also, I don't consider myself a "Controllerist" but a DJ, stay classy
