That, and I suppose they felt that the IDM tag was being overly critical of other artists works.

"It's basically saying 'this is intelligent and everything else is stupid.' It's really nasty to everyone else's music." - Aphex Twin

But yeah, Electronica is the label I'm familiar with (although I believe this term more often than not is used to describe all "EDM" by the music industry in America? could be wrong)

On topic though, the suggestions in this thread are spot on. I always like to bandy about Future Sound of London / Amorphous Androgynous as well.

Well then, if a mod would change the title to maybe something along the lines of "IDM/Electronica thread," that would probably be suitable. Unless there's already and electronica thread that is.

Well, as I always read it (from a guy who went directly from Alice DeeJay to Aphex Twin and never looked back when he was 16), IDM and Braindance (which I like better as the term) always seemed to me as the kind of music that is there for you when Drum and Bass to Jungle to Breakcore has left your body an aching shell of PCP and shame and all that's there to jam is in your head. It's not that the music is too smart; it's that it takes you in directions not for the body. It's why it takes Chris Cunningham to make dance videos for it.

In any case, my personal flow through the genre was

Aphex Twin - Flim (song) (gateway to all purchases)
    to
Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy EP (Album)
    to
    Squarepusher - Big Loada (Album)
    to
    μ-Ziq - Lunatic Harness (Album)
    to
Venetian Snares - Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding (Album) (mistake, not recommended entry point)
    to
    Autechre - Tri Repetae++ (Album)
    to
Boards of Canada - Geogaddi (Album)
    to
Venetian Snares - Rossz csillag alatt született (Album) (The most correct entry point and the album bought the day I started dating my wife)

Plaid - Trainer (Album) and The Orb - The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld (Album) came in somewhere among those, one bought at Tower Records in Fairfax VA (the one that had it's own IDM, Experimental, and Industrial labeled sections and the most important discovery of my terrible music tastes), and the other bought from Virgin Megastore after I moved to New York, but I don't remember much more about their place in the timeline.

    TL;DR
Listening to this music leads to me making mixes like this:

and for the OP, if I were to suggest one track for you to try based solely on Flashbulb (depending on album of entry)...

    μ-Ziq - Catkin and Teasel

    That is all,
    I apologize for the Inconvenience

Bringing an old thread back to life, I recently found this group called seekae. If you haven't heard em they've got great ambient analogue-y sounds and I particularly enjoy their album "The Sound of Trees Falling on People." Great stuff. Call it what you want but from my loose understanding of the genre, I guess I would consider it electronica. Getting into the softer side of this genre lately.
    Anyways check em out
Also contribute if you find anybody new!

Edit: Also been listening to the likes of Jamie XX, Mount Kimbie, Koreless, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Don't know what to call all of that though, I just know it's awesome
and Explosions in the Sky, but that's way off topic...
