Hey everyone I'm noticing in a lot of mixes i'm watching on youtube of people mixing hip hop that they often cut in and out of verses. I know fundamentals states u respect the chorus, but does the same rule apply for the verse.

personally i think it's heavily dependent on the tracks being mixed. if the cut between two works, i think it's fair game.

I say there is no 'fundamentals rule' that would say you can't cut the verse. But hipnotikk is right, it really does depend on the track...but that certainly would not make it a rule. where as with chorus...it's a VERY rare occasion that someone will say 'sure! cut the chorus early!'

i was actually thinking of that technique that Drama uses when i was talking about cutting verses, pretty interesting, i think he's a good DJ to look at if you want to see a quality example of hip hop mixing technique.
but yeah, i think there may be "guidelines" rather than "rules". it may sound trivial, but i think that dubbing something a "rule" says that it cannot and should not be broken, while "guideline" implies that in most cases it's a good idea to follow, but can be bent depending on the situation. i think that it's impossible and in bad taste to apply a general technique to all situations as each transition is unique, and techniques must be applied in their own way to each mix.
