I learned to beatmatch with MIDI controllers. On the VCI it's nice because there is a data send light. So while the faders aren't super precise (better yet, because the MIDI medium limits the faders), when you think you're close to matching the BPM you can make the smallest adjustments possible by watching if the 'data send' light goes off or not, so you know when you move the fader that it's actually changing the BPM.
