Just add it in the preferences. No conflicts - just use the manual MIDI mapping if you find you dislike the defaults.
I am running into the same issue. I have 4 usb controllers and i want the UC-33 to just control the mixer and the rest to not automatically assign to the mixer. Alas, i will RTFM and let you know my results. Likewise if you find a solution Durtyjerz let me know.

For each midi track, select the "input" to be the device you want.
The input setting is under the slots above the send controls.
So for the drum rack track, select only the drum pad as the input.
I think that's what you were looking for unless you meant something else.
ok guys, no joy, i want to map my mpd18 to the drum rack, but they wont midi map for some reason. only half the pads work, but the apc20 in note mode works fine... what i want to do is use the apc20 for standard stuff. track volume, clip launch, scene launch etc. and use the mpd18 strictly for the drum rack and impulse. i could reallly use some help.

To the guy with the uc-33: you may need to change the cc value. I had a ton of difficulty with mine when I first tried to add it to my set up. Turns out the uc-33 was conflicting with the other controller. I can't remember the way to do it, but I do remember it being really easy to change the cc
i got the akai mpd18 to work but only after going into the akai editor and changing the CC values. then in ableton i have to make sure that i dont select the mpd18 as an input/output source. so far its all good. im gunna have try to do several layers now for CC for drum racks that have more than one 4x4 grid

Also I figured out that changing the CC assignment plus the midi channel for each controller makes all my controllers play nicely in ableton. I have to select the controller + input channel per strip in ableton but now I have a beast of a system with 4 controllers.
