It's not generating revenue since it's DJTT's own shop. The only revenue is if people happen to buy these things, but I don't think that's a very large percentage. Plus, a lot of the visitors already know about DJTT's shop.

Exactly, there's no benefit to anyone and it's just annoying having a huge picture pop up when you're trying to read through a discussion.

Third party ads would be more annoying but they would at least be justifiable.

there are two plugins for Firefox
    NoScript
    and
    AdBlock
get them both and install them
you choose what sites are allowed to show ads while you are looking at them
Also if you want to just block images from a specific domain, you can rightclick the ad image and select
Block Images from Googleads.com xxxxxx whatever

I have both and they are both installed and working. I guess these ads from DJTT are too new to be on the blocking list yet.

Adblock lets you filter certain URLs but these pictures seem to be hosted on some Amazon servers so I don't want to risk blocking too loosely.

if you block the exact domain of
    "amazonaws.com"
    you wont be blocking AMAZON.com

I know that, but other more useful images that I want to see could be hosted there too.
