Building an audience

I've slowly started gaining some fans over the two years I've been active on SoundCloud. When I started, it was just a place to put some mixes I did to show to other DJs and promoters. Over the past few months, however, I've gotten more serious about producing and have slowly started adding to the list of remixes I have on there, as well as working on some original mixes I'm going to be adding pretty soon.

How have some of you gone on to reach as many listeners as possible without resorting to spamming them? I know that most places say to make good music and people will naturally share it with others, but I don't want to wait for luck to play its hand.

Maybe I'm putting too much importance in the numbers game, but I really just want to get my music out there. It's a big motivation to produce more when you see that others are enjoying it. I offer everything for free, so the end goal isn't fame or money. I really just want to grow as a producer and share my work with as many people as possible.

I noticed that my mixes don´t reach that much people i hoped for. So i started to share them on YT, a friend of mine a posted it on anook.com (thats the only platform where he is active) when the upload was complete. After one night i had about 300 views...thats seems not to be much, but for me it is

Give it a try and post it on specific and public forums. Thats what i did. If people like your stuff, they will probably want to hear more

Keep focusing on producing and remixing. People are more likely to remember you if you're producing original stuff (versus mixing sets). If people remember who you are, it's more likely to spread through word of mouth. Remixing bigger name artists is also an easy way to get some attention, especially if this artist tell their fans about your remix. Try to get your stuff featured in as much media as possible, even if it's completely unrelated. A Youtube video with a couple thousand views featuring one of your tracks is likely to get some attention.

Just keep making music and work on getting it out there in all sorts of media forms. Don't focus on the 1 to 1 force-feeding some people do, 'cause we all know how annoying it is to get spammed on facebook.

i get approached by social media marketing gurus trying to sell me listens and likes on a daily basis, but i could not care less.

What matters really is the impression you make.
What say you have 1000 'followers', but only 20 of those regularly listen to your work?
You effectively, would have 20 followers.

You seem to have a good ratio between followers and plays on your soundcloud.
Just keep doing what you're doing. You have obviously tapped into a fanbase who genuinely are interested in what you're doing.

Cool. Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm definitely devoting at least 90% of my time to making the music rather than posting and sharing on other sites and forums.

Anyone have any experience with submitting to music blogs like The Music Ninja?
