That works just fine, but the reverse (9 file in 8) doesn't work.

yes but be aware that 9 loses 32 bit plugin support (i.e. my favorite plugin Sylenth1!) so be aware of that before you update if you use a lot of those types of plugins

There also is a 32 bit version of Live 9, you can chose which one to download/install.

Also, there is an App to run 32 bit plug-ins in 64 bit Live 9, that is called jbridge and is available for windows and mac.
