That article makes me smile that I chose 840Pros for several of mine....they're some of the ones still going after 1PB (11 months straight of 24/7 writes).

A DJ will NOT use drives that fast.

I'm completely confident that you'll want something new before you need something new.
Wow, that's really quite reassuring about the technology. I guess I will start looking into SSDs when the capacity and price reach a good point.

Thats crazy fast, but no wonder you think hard drives need to be replaced often.

Spinning drive or SSD? Powered or not powered?

Does it really matter? As long as I don't buy something that is no good with Traktor - does it matter what the hell I do buy?
Patch, Ive answered your question as have others. What are you struggling with?

As myself and lucidstrings and others have said, the brand and type doesnt matter. You pick the form factor you want, the speed you want, and find something that fits your budget. All the info you need is in this thread.

Just buy two, or make sure you are able to back it up daily to something else.

I have had some SSD in service for over 2 years on mechanics laptops that receive 100gb worth of ISO images copied to them monthly

Youve highlighted a point that a lot of people miss when looking at failure rates.

Failure rates are what happens on average to a very large number of devices. A particular hard drive could run for ever, or it could fail in a day. Which is why one needs to stand back and look at the big picture and focus on the safety of the data, not the hard drive.

    There's a saying I like:

If your data doesn't exist in at least two locations, it doesn't exist at all.

The saying is actually 'three locations'

1 - Master copy on your computer that you use daily.
2- On site daily backup of master copy
3 - Offsite backup at some interval according to risk and downtime.

2 copies is no good, because people tend to keep those hard drives together. House gets burgled? They will take your laptop and any hard drives they can see. Youve just lost everything. Fire, too.

These days I use a combination of cloud backup for the really important stuff, and an onsite daily backup for the bulk stuff.

I know for my music collection I switched to iTunes Match and have been moving to put tracks on the cloud which is nice because it allows me to limit my collection and I can prep a playlist and then analyze it and use it between devices I highly recommend it for the 26$ a year it costs of say has exceeded my expectations
