Default What kind of cables are recommended for Powered Monitors?

DJ noob here. I apologize if this has already been discussed in another thread. I could not find it but a link would be much appreciated.

I need some help picking out the right cables for my two JBL EON 510. It is my understanding that gauge/length etc. matter when you are running a wire form you amplifier to your passive speaker. BUT, since my speaker is powered, does the gauge/length matter? Will 12 or 18 gauge make a difference?

Also, does it matter if I get the 1/4" TRS or XLR connections? Does one provide superior quality?

    Thanks!

Use good xlr cables and make sure they are in good condition is what I mean.... Also power cords lots of people over look this on a powered setup but having heavy gauge power cables do make a difference and if your using extension cords make sure they are of same or close to same gauge... You don't want to under power a powered speaker...

I don't know if there's any facts to back this up but I k ow when I run smaller gauge power cords on my powered speakers they have issues either clip easier or just in general don't sound like they are running as best they can... I went to a music place and picked up nice heavy gaue power cables and either something else has changed or they have made speakers be able to push harder...

Also I have never had a powered speaker go into thermal shutdown and I have pushed them hard before especially subs

    Thank you for your response.

So for the POWER cables, a good size gauge (12 gauge or the like) is what you are recommending to make sure the powered speakers are powered properly.

For the STEREO cables from my traktor S4 MK2 to the powered speakers you are recommending XLR to XLR? And gauge is not too much of concern for stereo cables since I have powered speakers?

I prefer xlr ends to 1/4" TRS - there is no chance of shorting out an xlr when the connector is inserted/removed. Look for a flexible rubber jacket on the cable - that will coil easier and last longer. Look for quality metal ends - this is a "mechanical part" and the connections do add wear and tear. Neutrik, Switchcraft, and others are the "name brands" for quality. But there are other examples of quality connectors.

For DJs on a budget, I have used GLS audio cables for years without any issues. They are not the best quality, but I have about 100 of these cables in my own setup and I have installed close to 500 others in "semi-permanent" installations (dance studios, clubs, etc). I would not have tried these cables before seeing some ahead of time - but having tried them, they are good value for money with more than adequate quality and durability for "part time mobile DJ use." I would not recommend these for a "full time touring or production company" use case - but that's not even 0.1% of the users here. I last ordered in 2012, and things are subject to change.

I'll check which cables I have in my back of cables I can't remember off top of my head but rubber jacket where xlr and cable meet is definitely preferred
