People forget the Denons were the standard at the time.
I was a vinyl guy who didn't think there was enough content on CD to switch... And also couldn't understand how to mix without slowing down a record. Until I actually played on a Denon and was blown away.
First deck was a BST in around 96 and then a CMX 3000 in 2000ish... Was into CD DJing but still couldn't bring myself to spend the extra $ on the CDJ 1000 that just came out.

From memory I learnt on a mates Gemini dual CD player around 1997 but I first purchased a CMX3000 for mobile use (can't remember when).
From there I purchased one of the last sets of CDJ500S (the smaller ones, they called them CDJ700S outside of Australia I think) and I still have them in good working order!
CDJ1000's were next, mk1's then mk2's (all sold off now) ... then CDJ2000's that I still use.

Mind you I've had the same set of Technics throughout this entire time!

I'd have to say that I still like the little CDJ500S players, simple and solid, and the jog wheel was so sensitive. I think it would be a great test for current DJ's to try and use these, and while we're at it they should match them up with an old Rane MP24 for the complete experience

Plenty of studio gear and not enough time ... and a few Nexo PA systems

Its the media, not the medium that counts

They could still have been there was oodles of time between the (horrible IMHO) CDJ-500 and the CDj-500s (700) to bring out something tasty and compete while the market was in crossover.

Hell even Gemini had a CDJ500 knockoff while Denon were bringing out niche (but oddly cool) stuff like DJ minidisc players and fuller featured rack mounted ones.

The 500s (CDj-700) were a total game changer though, overnight they were everywhere alongside turntables, or above them and instant "industry standard" material and i doubt anyone could have caught up knocked them off their podium after the first 6 months.

I learned on turntables. The first set of cdj's I plkayed on were pioner cdj100s. showed up to a gig. The promoter had these and no turntables. This was back in 2001. Luckily, I had demos of productions and remixes on hand to play with. Otherwise I would've been funked.

Pair of CDJ-400's with Serato Scratch Live. The minute they got HID support for Traktor I immediately switched over as I always hated SSL.

Those 400's are still probably the best reasonably priced home deck controllers for Traktor I've run into.

Denon and A & H seemed really popular when I lived in Canada but not so much when i came back to state side. Maybe it was an import tax thing. I know Ecler is really popular in the EU but never really caught on here. Denon is really under rated and always liked them better than Pio.
