you want the stems creator tool - should be available for free soon http://www.stems-music.com/stem-creator-tool/index.html

could probably just pack mp3's into an mp4 container yourself but think the creator tool has some compression options in too and can't find the open source format described in detail anywhere yet.

edit: compression options as in audio compression not file size compression

I think Stems might take off within the closed circles of established producers/djs in any given scene. I can see stems being passed about among big name producers / DJs but never being made available to the paying public (or being made available long after the tune was hot). Kinda like an exclusive remix / VIP version that only certain DJs have. Because if I was a big name producer, the last thing I'd want is my hot new tune being remixed endlessly by a load of kiddy bedroom producers.

Check this excellent write up, it will tell you step by step how to create an excellent stem.mp4 file making use of ffmpeg.

I think that NI found out, that using 4 tracks is the way to go as far as acceptable cpu loads go. Hence 4 tracks.
The fifth stem is the complete track release, so it plays as normal.

Established DJs and producers already share their stems with each other, this is a gimmick to squeeze more money out of a track

How many times did I tell to myself that this track had a nice line I wouldn't mind taking, but not the whole track. How many times did I told myself I wanted to eq and apply fx on only parts of a track. I think it's great. However I'm afraid the catalogue of tracks available as stem tracks to buy would be limited like the remix sets.

ive started using them and they are really great. I managed to do a quick mix on the fly of about 30min just leveraging 3 tracks, 2 stem files and the fx on the DM900. Really versatile and the D2s just rock. Im hoping to see more labels bring stems out. So far beatport is my goto source for the format untill others start to bump up their catalogue

The word "Stems" sounds completely amateur to me.

They're called "Parts". Always have been.

For my one of the key of success is distribution: I'm currently browsing Beatport and on one hand I REALLY appreciate being able to listen to the individual stems of a track, on the other the limited offer (don't get me wrong it's already better than what's CURRENTLY available for remix decks) AND the impression of a 'back catalog' (once again don't get me wrong I would love to have a lot of older tracks available, I have plenty of ideas - but not one on offer right now teased me enough).
Putting aside the not so great shopping experience with Beatport (seriously after all this time I don't get how to have so many things that don't make sense on this store), i hope that:
    - stems tracks won't be use as a mean to 'relaunch a track', ie an individual release then later on the stems version.
    - the catalog increases drastically and the format is embraced by all main labels and the underground alike
    - the price is a bit 'high' but that's subjective
    - stems tracks are available individually and I'm not obliged to buy the full release (yes Im' thinking about you REMIX SETS, the more the limitations, the less I'm going to buy, idiots...).

I would happily mix with only stems tracks, it makes me shop differently, I get a new angle on tracks/parts. I'm very excited about this and I hope controllers (more screens/tablets integration- less laptop; integration of controls for stems) and softwares (it would have been half decent to have a stem view on traktor, that's lame to not have it and I p.. on the excuses about graphic resources. Yeah yeah ok it will come in time to right now I just have the impression "no S8, no D2? too bad cool story bro".
To balance that feeling of having been given a nice bike without wheels, I'm very excited about the format and I hope to play extensively with it.
And It's not too bad, I have a F1 but I feel like 'poor' ^^
