    I disagree. Learning to beatmatch is learning to keep rhythm and to keep time.

    @OP;
    I've had fun on controllers and fun with vinyl. I think I agree with some of what you say, I feel way more involved with the music when I'm mixing it by ear than on Traktor. But I like the capabilities that controllers bring to the table; loops, hot cues and the other gubbins.
    I think that's why I'm happy with my 3900's because with those I get to do both.
    Live rig: Denon Prime (5000M's)
    Retired: Denon x1700, Denon SC3900's, Traktor, Technics SL1200's, my vinyl
    Wish list: Some Roland Aira stuff.

    I disagree also. You can learn rhythm and timing without beat matching. And conversely rhythm and timing don't disappear when you use sync.

    If I were king there would be a test you had to take before calling yourself a "DJ". Beat matching would be on that test. But it's just not the reality of things.

    Are you a better DJ if you know how to beat match? I would think so. Are you a bad DJ because you don't? No.

    DJ Eff: But I'm not comparing it to a Mixtrack. I've mixed with an S2, and whilst it was ok, give me my old 1000s and DJM 600 anyday, just out of the pure involvement in the mixing.

    I guess part of it though is that you can step up to anything once you can mix on a pair of turntables. I've been at house partys were a supposed bar dj absolutely trainwrecked it when my mate had his 1210s set up. It'd be embarrassing for me as a dj to do that

    Comparing a mixtrack to CDJ's seems like youre comparing a nissan versa, to a BMWM3.
    Of course driving the M3 is going to be more exciting, its got more buttons and it pushes you to be more exciting with your driving style.
    execpt the m3 is 600hp race car with no traction control and no abs breaking
