Don't underestimate people... around here, people tend to use "techno" as the generic term for edm, not actual techno (as in minimal 808 derived groovy rhythms with 303s and other random groovy minimal shit), but they still know what dubstep or electro house are and can identify them.

Could you distinguish between a romantic piece of classical music and a baroque one? between one piece from Gustav Mahler and one from Bela Bartok?

To most people it's all classical music... and classical music is one of the richest "genres" in the whole history of music as it encompasses more than a thousand years.

Why would a genre that only has a few decades be different except for conaisseurs?

Forget about people saying it's crap because it's electornic. Sure there is crap in electronic, the same as in any other musical style. Labeling one type of music as crap = ignorance, and why should you pay attention to ignorants?

I think the big thing is that techno is easier to say than electronic dance music in normal conversation, and easier for people who don't listen to EDM to grasp. Don't take it personally =P

On another note: I strongly dislike people who say "Oh, I like everything except country and/or rap." Because they're very nearly always wrong. Whenever I get this answer, I resist the urge to grab them by the face and slap them around a bit and ask "So, do you listen to Gregorian Chants and Terrorfakt?"
I'm not good at things, but I like to pretend I am.

Whenever people say the "except country or rap" thing it makes me sort of boil over. They're generally the same people who listen to the same type of music that the industry is pushing. You can pretty much tell that they're not really interested in music as anything but something to listen to while they drive to work.

It's just about knowing your target audience whenever you're playing, I guess.

I quite like some of the modern country. There's a few Sara Evans tracks that could do with a Ferry Corsten remix.

Limey, heard the Tiesto remix of "Achy Breaky Heart"? Tune of the year IMO.

    oh jeez haha. oh god.

I get what you are saying about classical, and to be honest, I have difficulty discerning what i'm listening to (unless its some "mainstream" classical music, you know hehe). But in the odd chance I find myself listening to is, I sit, and I listen. I dont immediately flick it to something new.... because, regardless of my taste, it is impossible to ignore composition (at least for me, obviously not for everyone). Music we have today would be a shade of its current glory if it wasn't for a such a rich background of coordination, and work, on the part of classical composers and performers.

    btw Gregorian chants are BA
